Re: Shots (confirmed) Explosions (unconfirmed) Watertown, MA

HiltonMagic has a point, though one that I wouldn't make so forcefully. Shutting down a city of one million people is a bit of overkill for one guy. That kind of response, in counterterrorism terms, is designed for a larger threat (chemical/biological/dirty bomb).

You can make the argument for erring on the side of safety, but in terms of terrorism, it is important to ask this question: what is the goal of a terrorist attack? It is to create fear on a level far beyond the scale of the actual attack. On that level, this was a mistake, but one that we can learn from.

Thank you. That's what I'm trying to say. Just never been one for tact.

Even if they thought he'd flee to a crowded area with a bomb?

I'm guessing the city of Boston is pretty happy. I assume you dont live there.

You think it'd be a good idea to allow people to be out and about in large groups at stores and malls etc. while a bomber is on the loose that only days before targeted groups of people? One day of extra precaution does not mean that the terrorists win. Now if we stay scared and alter how we do things in the future then you might have a point.

They invaded Boston, not in New Hampshire.

Possibly. The term they were using, "shelter in place" is straight out of the counterterrorism manual. That kind of order is designed to keep people from getting hurt in a panicked attempt to check on family members, get the hell out of Dodge, or to get out and expose themselves to whatever has happened.

Don't get me wrong, this was one heck of a job in getting this guy with no more casualties, and is a success story.

this this this. The fact that they found 7 more IEDs in his residence makes you think he (they if the brother had lived) wouldn't have hesitated to use them.

It's definitely an interesting question though - where is the line drawn? Any terrorist? Or any dangerous suspect you believe to be in a localized area? Or not at all?

Have we ever really had a "terrorist" left on the loose after an incident like this? Usually they kill themselves or are caught very quickly. McVeigh and the DC Sniper come to mind as ones hanging around longer.

They were identified, desperate, and had already been in a deadly firefight that day. Totally different situation than Tuesday-Thursday IMO.

So you think they should have locked down more people for longer? They didn't know where they were located until last night. It sounds like they were pretty careful in their actions, not panicking people unnecessarily, instead waiting until they had confirmation of where the suspects were before taking precautions for the rest of the public in the area. Not to mention the additional robberies and murders that occurred that night certainly changed things a bit.

Eric Rudolph was on the loose awhile.

Edit: He wasn't caught until 7 years after the Olympic Bombing.
