    Rhoads Quote on RB competition

    On the depth...

I thought this was a good summary, worth posting on the board.

ďIt is a good problem to have first of all and to try to figure out. DeVondrick Nealy has had an impressive spring, both running and catching the football. Jeff Woody has had three straight days of really making us a better offense, making us a better football team by doing a number of different things, things he really hasnít done at all or to a level that we need him two in the three previous years. Thatís physical blocking, moving around, motion as an H-back and even lining up in a traditional tight end location. He carried the ball well in Saturdayís scrimmage. James White has remained steady as he always has and shows us the things that he does well. Aaron Wimberly has burst on the scene much like we had hoped he would but he is very dynamic. He is fast. He doesnít need much of a hole to get through and catches the ball extremely well. We do count on Shontrelle to be back and healthy as well. Rob Standard missed a couple of days with his head dinged up and had a productive day Saturday. He has put on additional weight. He is in the neighborhood of 215, which could put him in a position like Jeff of being a lead blocker, pass protector and so forth. When you get to August and you really start competing for those carries and those snaps is when we will sort that out a little bit. We are afforded the opportunity to do some more stuff with two backs. We are afforded the opportunity to maybe put a guy split out as well as still have backs on the field. Any time that you can do that with similar personnel groupings it creates matchup problems and call problems for a defensive coordinator. Thatís the positive that the depth at running back will allow us to do. You are always going to have injuries. It never goes away at that position and having that depth will be positive for us as well.Ē

Really excited to see what Woody and Wimberly bring to the offense this year. White needed more carries last year. Nealy will be a real good one when its his time.

Glad to hear that about shontrelle. Does that mean they expect him to play this season? Game 1? Maybe they'll rest him until they need him

Seems like Standard has been here for 5 years. I look forward to him contributing after a stellar high school career

I think he sees the field when Woody and White are gone. A combo of him, Nealy and Wimberly lets me know our run game is secure for years to come.

I really hope they follow through on the thoughts of using the RBs in different situations. Especially since we have an unproven group of WRs, and we keep hearing about how well Wimberley and Nealy can catch the ball. I hope we can put them in the slot and get them some "runs" via the bubble screen. It would also be nice to use those guys on reverses and misdirection type of plays.

Interesting you should put it this way--since Nealy and Wimberly are "unproven" as well--and we also keep hearing about how well Bundrage, Daley, Coleman, Brun, Bibs and etc are catching the balll...

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.
    (They just disappear offseason)

Well, I guess Brun is proven, but we haven't heard anything about them catching the ball since both he and Bibbs have been injured.

Nevertheless, there has been a lot more talk about the RBs (with the possible exception of Bundrage), and if we have Winberley and Nearly split out, we still have the exact same backfield we had last year, but with one more year of experience. I know Shontrelle/White/Woody may not be 1st team all Big 12, but I think they are good enough to win with if we get production elsewhere (and if Shontrelle could stay healthy enough to get sufficient practice and game reps he could be a great back).

Good problem to have...I think we need more competition at QB. I think at 200 pounds and almost 6'2" Richardson is under-sized and going to get banged up especially with our young O-line.

The OLine will have two seniors and three juniors starting- not exactly young or inexperienced.
