    Compare Oregon to Iowa State

    Just read this piece on Oregon's latest beef with the NCAA. Says that the Ducks football staff made 730 impermissible calls compared to Iowa State's 79. Draw your own conclusions...

    with just a few hundred more impermissible calls ISU could have played for the national title?

    But in all seriousness, if we get any sort of punishment whereas they get a slap on the wrist it just confirms how messed up the NCAA is. If it were to happen, would be all because of Knight and Nike protecting Oregon whereas since we wouldn't have any big $$$ to go to bat for us we'd get screwed. But here I go jumping to conclusions...

    It will be interesting to see how this plays out vs how ISU's situation plays out.

    Oregon should have much stiffer penalties than ISU based on the volume of calls and the fact that they paid a recruiter but because its big $$ program who knows.

    This. I doubt the Portland Tribune ran front page articles and wrote editorials and questioned the UofO president about the controversy.

    But then again, people probably actually read that newspaper.

    So I am slightly confused. In what I have read about the ISU phone calls it mentions that the amount of impermissable calls were at 1484. Now I understand that most of these were logging issues, but were they impermissable?

    Yeah, it's hard to tell what the apple to apple comparison is. The article says-

    Rather, the report says most of the 730 calls were “administrative” and did not directly involved recruiting.
    “Nonetheless, the calls provided an indirect recruiting advantage in the form of freeing up the valuable resource of time for the coaching staff to focus its time and substantive recruiting endeavors,” the report says.
    The calls were made to prospective players, their coaches or their high school coaches.

    Sounds like this may be more an issue of people setting up appointment times, visit schedules etc. Which I honestly have no idea what the rules are.

    Plus, so far we've only really gotten Iowa State's and Oregon's side of the story and however much spin they've added.

    The whole NCAA situation is just so messed up. Without subpoena power and the ability to carry out true criminal-like investigations, it's nearly impossible job to prove egregious wrong-doing people care about. Instead, the NCAA is only able to enforce people's inability to follow its Byzantine set of rules.
