Friday OT - Ridiculous Coaching Experiences

Thanks again to ruxCYtable for the great thread idea!

What are some of your ridiculous coaching experiences? Here's how he described it, which is better than I can do:

"Could be from any perspective. A coach dealing with a ridiculous parent. A coach dealing with an obnoxious player. A player who had an obnoxious coach. A parent or player who did something ridiculous or had some kind of ridiculous rules."

Re: Friday OT - Ridiculous Coaching Experiences

During my sophomore year of high school, we were playing a JV basketball game and just getting killed. The team that we were losing to wasn't that good, and for whatever reason we couldn't get anything to fall. I think we were down by 20 or so at the half.

So at halftime, we head to the locker room and our coach was the last one in. With all the players sitting on the benches not moving much, our coach weaves through us to the white board at the far end of the locker room, rips out his marker, and writes in huge capital letters:

"*******" (slang for multiple female genitalia)

And he shouts "THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE ALL PLAYING LIKE" before spiking his marker into the ground and it shattering everywhere.

It was pretty hard not to laugh after he did it.

Had my football coach smash a video cassette against the wall during halftime.

The worst is probably reffing little league basketball games, 3-6th grade boys and girls, and coaches freaking out over everything.

I've coached my son's soccer team since he was 5, we've had some obnoxious coaches, the stereotypical tryhards that base their entire self-worth on how well their 7 year old soccer team does. And some overzealous parents who are yelling at the poor 10 year old ref who's reffing their first ever game, smaller towns seem to have the worst parents, Nevada, Colo, Collins-Maxwell, a whole lotta white trash going on in those towns. Gilbert has always been nice and respectful both coaches and parents.

Having the opposing coach get mad at us in basketball for keeping a starter in when things were out of reach. Only problem was that we only dressed 9 kids due to illness.

We had an assistant football coach in high school who was a fireman in Rochester, MN. He used to like to regale us with stories of rescue calls involving gerbils that had gotten into places that no gerbil should ever go.

In 1984, I was hospitalized for approaching perfection.

Not a coaching experience, but as a parent, when my son was in the first year of tee ball, we had some moms constantly ******** about various things (the umps, certain calls, missed plays). And they DIDN'T EVEN KEEP SCORE THAT YEAR.

One of our high school football coaches busted a clipboard on a helmet of a player during practice.

A different coach wrote in marker the word ******* on a kids forehead. That had a bit of controversy if I remember correctly.

I was helping to coach a 5th grade boys basketball team last year and during one of the games an opposing coach (probably 35-40 years old) got thrown out of the game for arguing a double dribble call and ran off with the gameball we were using. It wasn't a big deal since each team brings several balls to the games, but still.

Re: Friday OT - Ridiculous Coaching Experiences

Wasn't that ridiculous but my senior year of football we were losing 14-0 in our first district game to one of our rivals. Our coach was so mad that he busted his whiteboard that was probably 3'x2' over his knee. I'll give him credit, we played better the next half. In basketball we were losing to some god awful team at halftime and our coach went on a rampage in the locker room, he was so ****** off that he kicked our water bottle carriers across the room and busted a few things in the locker room. Funny thing is, the year before he did the same thing when we lost our undefeated season.

Re: Friday OT - Ridiculous Coaching Experiences

I've been coaching high school football for 12 years and up until last year never had any issues. Especially in DSM area, you know these guys from other teams very well. See them quite a bit. In some cases work together and even live beside each other. The "hobby" as a whole is a pretty tight-knit group of guys and for the most part we all get along pretty well. Had one situation last year with an opposing coach coming out to mid field yelling at us during the game and then going back to the track and yelling up at our sophomore staff (during the varsity game) in the press box so his own crowd could hear that he was yelling.
Nothing coaching high school football could prepare me for coaching soccer at the 6, 7, and 8 year old level. Its not overzealous dads either. Its the moms coaching that take a game where they don't keep score way too seriously, and even worse yet are the grandparents. They are the ones who show up on Saturdays at the game having no idea what to expect, and really don't understand that it is a rec league where they don't keep score, and don't understand the sport in general.

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.

Re: Friday OT - Ridiculous Coaching Experiences

The same coach who wrote dumb*** on a kid forehead was somehow our basketball coach my junior year. Knew nothing about basketball at all and had ridiculous practice drills. (Hockey but with basketball. No fouls or travels, line changes, just real stupid ****.)

No one really liked him and we underperformed the first few weeks. He knew nobody liked him and we liked the assistant. After a loss, he came in the locker room and said he would quit coaching basketball. All we had to do was say the word and he would quit.

Really weird situation to be put in as a junior in HS.
