    Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban...

...appear to be at the top of the LSU coaching search list if and when Miles bolts for Michigan.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Nick Saban back at LSU. Interesting and it makes sense.

LSU fans hate Nick Saban right now. No way they would hire him away from Alabama again.

I thought Pellini might be a candidate if he doesn't end up in Nebraska.

Dude, I live in Baton Rouge and am an LSU supporter. I think I understand the dynamic down here pretty well.

Until he (Saban) went to Alabama, Miles heard a lot of "Saban wouldn't have done that" or "Saban's teams would have done...". People love Saban because he brought a National Championship.

Certainly, Tiger fans don't like Saban right now because he coaches Alabama and they are the enemy. However, after the last couple of years with Miles (great talent and no national championship along with a team that is undisciplined), I think many long for his return. Saban has a lot of friends in power at LSU...the athletic department, the administration, the board of supervisors, etc. Most LSU fans would love getting him back...especially to stick it to Alabama.

Having said that, I think it is a long shot. Saban will listen if approached. Rumor is his wife and kids really miss Baton Rouge (where they were treated like royalty) and that he is not getting along well with Paul Bryant, Jr. (the Bear's son). But the money would have to be astronomical. I do think Saban has become a little concerned about his image as well (moving around too much) and he might want to avoid the criticism he would get. But he has no buy-out in his deal with Bama so he can live with no cost to him or the school getting him.

I think Spurrier is more likely, but his age is the one factor that is against him (against the many in his favor).

A third name out there is Rich Rodriguez...he was Tommy Bowden's OC when at Tulane (in New Orleans) so he has some connections. The big drawback with him is that he will likely be playing for the National Championship and untouchable until early January as a consequence.

No way Pelini would even be considered at LSU for two big reasons:

    1) Pelini has never been a head coach on this level.

    2) LSU fans are less than happy with how the defense has played this year...lack of an aggressive attacking brand of defense they grew to love under Saban...poor results with tremendous personnel...etc. He would be a "tough sell" for the AD to the fans if hired as the head coach.

Man, that would be just too damn funny, if Saban bolted again. I mean, just hilarious.

No one could ever trust the guy again, not that many people are now.

Is he going to come out and say "I'm not interested in the LSU job...at all. There is no way I become the LSU head coach" 38 times before he finally takes the job?

LSU fans not happy averaging 11 wins per season...sheesh.

Seems like it would be a bad move for Saban. I can't believe LSU fans would welcome him back wholeheartedly. If they did, I guess it's proof that winning is all that matters.

The LSU fanbase is beginning to remind me of Nebraska's, only worse.

11 wins each of the first two seasons BUT...no SEC Championships and no National Championships. The bar is set high down here!

Shhhh...don't tell Nebraska that. They think Pelini is the second coming of Osborne.

You are correct, some fans wouldn't want him back...but if he came back and they won the National Championship next year they would be in love again!

Winning isn't all that matters...but it is the most important thing on the list of things that do matter down here.

I am tiring a little of ISU fans knocking fans of other schools for having high expectations. Frankly, I think we need to be setting our expectations higher at ISU than we do. I will never knock a fanbase for having high expectations.

I hope you see how funny it is that a guy averages 11 wins per season and the fans don't care if he leaves. The LSU is a top program no doubt, but they can't play/win the national championship every year because there are 5-6 of the other elite programs trying to do the same thing. They want Miles out because he hasn't won a title in 2 freaking years there? That is a little ridiculous, even you have to admit that.

Re: Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban...

As Billy Bob Thorton exclaims in Bad Santa, "they can't all be winners, son!".

Look where very high expectations got Nebraska. They canned a winning head coach and the next guy they brought in to lead 'em back to the promise land, led them to the hog trough, especially defensively - something they always could hang their hat on (See Blackshirts).

While I can't blame LSU fans for being unhappy the past two years when it looked like they were moments away from greatness, I'm not sure "running" a damn good coach outta town will achieve what they want. It won't look like that, but if what you've been saying frequently is true about fans not being happy with him - seems they did somewhat play a role in his departure (if he goes to Michigan that is).

What if Saban says no and actually means it? Spurrier remains at South Carolina? LSU will be able to lure away a good coach. Just not sure it will be as good as Miles.

Well, you're down there drinking the koolaid. :)

We're on the outside looking in. At some point, high expectations become unreasonably high expectations. Nebraska and Notre Dame are examples of what can happen when fan expectations become unattainable year after year. You can't keep recycling coaches and expect to realize them.
