I predict that Tiger DQ's himself before he tee's off.

That was for grounding his club in a "bunker." The other key difference is that Johnson was assessed the penalty before the round was complete. Tiger signed an incorrect scorecard, which is a dq offense.

The Golf Channel guys (including Faldo) are saying that is a no brainer, and that if he doesn't, it is a black mark on his whole career.

I love golf, but man there are a lot of stupid/anal rules. And I'm not just talking about this one in particular.

Why? He took the penalty and that should be it. Why are they saying he should DQ himself?

Even if you sign an incorrect scorecard you are not automatically DQ'd. THe rule was amended last year.

I'm fine with it. What a headline it would be if he still won.

Apparently it was determined that it was a DQ, which was then waived by the committee.

That's just Faldo being a meatball. I bet he wouldn't DQ himself in this scenario.

Those guys are a bunch of jealous idiots. Faldo is a joke. He just wishes his career was even half as good as Tiger's.

If Faldo is so smart, then why didn't he notice that Tiger committed a rule violation when he did it?

And if "rules are rules", then why shouldn't Tiger conform to the new rule about not DQ'ing someone who unintentionally commits an infraction?

This would be like in college basketball, a player gets a technical foul, and then says to the official.... "you know what, I actually deserve 2 technicals for what I did, so I'm kicking myself out of the game."

They want him to Dairy Queen himself because golf is one of the only sports where you can assess penalties against yourself. It is an honorable sport- since many times others dont see rule infractions you penalize yourself. I think that is what this is all about.

That's exactly it. They discussed Ben Hogan (I think) calling a penalty on himself that cost him a major when no one else saw it. It's not about whether he deserves it, but about the integrity of the game. I'm really not sure what my opinion is, but I can see both sides of the argument. Just unfortunate.
