LSU grants permission for Miles to speak with Michigan

Watching a hoops game on ESPN, they announced it there.

He is not allowed to speak with them until after the SEC title game this weekend.

    And...a link...

ESPN - Michigan gets permission to talk to LSU's Miles - College Football

LSU athletic director Skip Bertman confirmed Wednesday night through spokesman Herb Vincent that his Michigan counterpart, Bill Martin, has officially requested permission to speak with Les Miles about becoming the next coach of the Wolverines.

Bertman requested that the meeting not take place until after LSU plays Tennessee Saturday for the SEC championship. Martin told Bertman he will comply.

Miles played for Bo Schembechler at Michigan, where he met his wife and later became an assistant under Schembechler.

LSU will have its own meeting with Miles next week to make its pitch to keep Miles. Sources say Miles will be offered a sweetened deal.

Although formal discussions will wait for next week, a source close to the situation said Miles' agent, George Bass, was in Baton Rouge Wednesday meeting with LSU officials. The subject of those talks is unknown.

Miles has been at the center of speculation to be the next coach of the Wolverines since Lloyd Carr stepped down Nov. 19. The Michigan alum has carefully chosen his words when asked repeatedly about his interest in returning to his alma mater, but the one thing he has not done is say he is not a candidate.

LSU's national championship chase ended with an upset loss to Arkansas last Friday. That might have changed the timetable for negotiations with Michigan and freed up both sides to discuss the job sooner.

I would be very surprised if he went there.

I dunno, with these KF rumors seemingly squashed, it looks like all but a done deal.

He has such a great thing going at LSU. I know that Michigan is his alma mater but still, why mess with something that is already going great.

You got to be kidding. This is the Michigan job. It's way higher up the totem pole than LSU. Plus he's an Alum.

Re: LSU grants permission for Miles to speak with Michigan

    Interesting addition to the article:

Martin, who has not commented on the search since Carr's announcement, interviewed Michigan coordinators Ron English and Mike DeBord earlier this week
    What? No mention of Kirky?

Re: LSU grants permission for Miles to speak with Michigan

This should really be no surprise to any of you that have read my previous posts. I live in Baton Rouge and am relatively close to the situation.

I am a little surprised they released this info prior to the SEC Championship game on Saturday but I believe the Michigan job will be offered to Miles shortly after the game...either on Sunday or Monday. It will be his for the taking...and he will take it.

Most LSU fans really do not care if Miles and Pelini are elsewhere next year. Miles is 32-6 in three years so far but has wiffed the last two years on getting the crystal football back to Baton Rouge...most LSU supporters believe they have had National Championship talent this year and last. As for Pelini, his defense is loaded with talent that is not being utilized properly at LSU and fans are very frustrated with his lack of an aggressive attacking style of defense that they became used to under Saban.

Ferentz was NEVER in the picture for this job...NEVER. I would guess they released the information on interviewing the two coordinators to keep the minority hire crowd from breathing down their necks...English is a minority.

For the big news...the two names being bandied about down here for Miles' replacement are Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban. The new LSU System President is the guy that hired Spurrier at Florida and apparently Saban is not getting along well with Paul Bryant, Jr. at Alabama.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Agree with Cyclone#1, Miles is gone no way Miles and UM agree to talk unless the deal is already done.

Next question is who goes to LSU?

I'm not 100% on that one. When I first heard it, I thought people were crazy. Then, things began to add up. I think a connection or two he had there had him in consideration, yet not a front runner.

    We'll most likely never know.

I think you need to remember that, living in Iowa, you are subjected to "hawk-centric" thinking on a regular basis...through your news sources as well as the hawk fan base. This type of thinking would have you believe that Ferentz is a great coach and because of this he is highly coveted by others around the country. This thought process is, shall we say, delusional.

The reality is that Ferentz is not highly coveted around the country. He may have been coming off the great three year run that Iowa had several years ago...but no longer. Iowa fans better get used to the mediocrity in Iowa City because Ferentz is going nowhere on his own accord because he is not getting an offers to do so.

I cheer for two teams, Iowa State and whoever is playing the hawkeyes.

Michigan is probably the #1 (at least top 3) job in the country, and Miles is a Michigan guy. Why wouldn't he take it?

Just because I live in Iowa, doesn't mean I'm in a glass case of Hawkdom (thank you, Ron Burgundy).
