    Cell phone for work, who pays the monthly bill

    Just wondering if your company covers the monthly cost or if you have to pay a portion? I have a smartphone where I have to pay a portion of the cost every pay period around $30/month. Thanks in advance.

    Depends on the employer. If the employer pays it all there are likely strings attached.

    My company pays $90 of it a month. So I pay the rest of $25 or so. It's my phone plan I had before starting with them but instead of doing company issued phones they just let you keep your own and pay you back. Much better then my brothers company that pays for everything with a smart phone but kinda monitors who you call and what you use it phone and you can't download pay apps on phone.

    My company provides me a work cell phone. It is an old clamshell from 2006. Needless to say it hasn't left the junk drawer in two years.

    Funny thing is... they won't give me any kickback on my personal cell to not have to carry two but, they'll keep paying money for a cell phone to sit in my junk drawer.

    I've carried two phones in the past (one for work, one personal) and it was a TOTAL pain in the neck. Besides, if someone called my work cell and I didn't pick up they'd immediately call my personal cell ... so that was efficient.

    If I carried a smart phone for work, it would be monitored, apps blocked, limits on texts, open to public records info requests - never mind how my admin would freak out at how many minutes of talk time I go through a month.

    I now carry one phone, paid for entirely by me, and I use it for everything. It gets itemized on our taxes as non reimbursed business expense. Because I'm using it for my job, it it open to public records requests. I could care less about that. My husband and I share a plan as he talks on his phone all day, everyday.

    I can request $40/mo reimbursement from my employer, but frankly it's not worth the reams of paperwork on a monthly basis. We just roll it to tax deduction.

    I'm similar to bugs4cy. I was provided one but got tired of carrying two phones. And I didn't want to give up my phone, where I could chose when and what to upgrade. I don't feel guilty about texting or anything.

    Frankly, I don't use it enough for work purposes to mess with reimbursements. If I did, the tax deduction seems like a good idea.

    My company pays for everything - about $150 / month, including:

    + unlimited minutes
    + tethering / data plan for connection to iPad
    + 200 txt / month

    Mine is company owned and paid.

    Unlimited data, talk time is on a per minute charge (I dont use it that much anyway). I have my own apple id with my own acct linked to the phone so I can download and buy whatever apps but they are charged to me.

    Not having a cell phone bill for the last 7 yrs has been pretty nice, especially since the upgrade to smart phones.

    Similar for us. My company reimburses us $110/month. Which was calculated off the 3 major carriers and will cover everything (including taxes) that is needed for work.

    If the individual wants something extra (unlimited data, texts, hot spot, etc) then they (individual) will have to pay the difference. On the flip side, we're allowed to get family plans and the company will still cover the $110/month, so I actually make out very well with my wife and I only having to pay about $40/mo out of pocket and she gets unlimited data & texting. We share 1500 minutes.

    The individual gets to choose their phone (but is limited to android or iPhone) and the company will pay for a new phone (up to $350) every two years. We get to use them as though they are our phones and are not limited/monitored in any way on apps, music, movies, pictures, etc.

    The company I work for will reimburse us $50 a month for cell phone expenses. Or I can get a company supplied Blackberry for free.

    Back in the day when I worked for US Gov't they would either have you carry a cell phone or Blackberry, so you had 2 including your own. A PITA.

    I had one for a while but only used it when traveling so I gave it back so they could give it to somebody who "wanted" one. I figured the less they could get a hold of me the better. It was never really important when they'd call me anyway.

    I did give my personal cell number to a couple of close co-workers that I trusted in case there was an actually emergency and they really had to get to me. We were required to give the lodging and work phone numbers of anywhere we traveled so they could always eventually get us if they needed to.

    They wouldn't let you use the Gov't phone for anything private - ultra worried about viruses, espionage, etc.


    No matter what, I could NEVER cheer for Dirt and Urine.

    I have never owned my own cell phone. Our employer hangs a cell phone on us so they can reach us 24/7. We don't technically have unlimited minutes and texting but since all of our minutes are pooled between 30-40 phones it ends up working that way and it is paid 100% by the employer. They frown upon any charges for apps appearing on the bill, but if one does you can just reimburse them for it. My employer has always been very good about saying if we are making you carry it you should be able to use it for personal use (within reason). The same goes for the ipad that I just got this week. My IT guy was even giving me ideas of educational ipad apps I could download for my son.
