    Ames Hotel Tax

My sister is coming down for the Iowa game in September and we booked a hotel room. The taxes/fees come out to 29% of the room charge. Let's assume a 7% sales tax and an 8% hotel tax, where is the other 14% coming from?

I've never paid so much taxes/fees for one night even in downtown San Francisco or Chicago.

    Re: Ames Hotel Tax

Actually, the hotel/motel tax is probably the majority of the 29%.

    Re: Ames Hotel Tax

This is the most popular form of taxation, the "tax someone else" tax for something we want. Indianola has a similar tax which passed with great approval, in which new businesses that come to the area will pay for our new activity center.

How is that working so far? Bringing in lots of new businesses?

No one has made a joke about:
    Pic of sister?
    How old is she?
    She can stay with me?

You are all off this morning. Must be the dreary weather.

Did you ask them where the rest of the fee comes from?

    Re: Ames Hotel Tax

State hotel/motel tax rate is 5%. The local hotel/motel tax rate (which is applied on top of the state tax rate) may not exceed 7%. Iowa Department of Revenue - Iowa Taxes

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that 12 of that 29% is probably hotel/motel tax.

I don't know the details on this, but your summary looks like BS. How would this work in practice? Do "new businesses" pay additional property taxes? If so, how does that work - commercially zoned property purchased after a certain date has a different rate than property purchased before that date? If so, couldn't the new business rent instead of own? Sorry to sound skpetical, but your statement just sounds like propaganda from some group that didn't want something built.
