We lost Knott and Klein, not to mention Reeves, McDonough, Givens, and Maggitt. This isn't an easy game. Every other team in the B12 is working very hard with better recruits.

This isn't going to be our year. Get used to it. The future is still bright.

Re: CFTV: Wally Burnham assesses the defense in today's scrimmage

All Burnham did was admit that we are young. We still don't quite know what we have. And we won't until we have more 11 on 11 (in Spring, Summer, and maybe even real games in Fall).

Last year, Broomfield, Watson, and McDonough probably exceeded most of our expectations. So now, we look forward to who will exceed our expectations this year. And I'm looking for it on the O-line and D-lines (which will make everyone better).

I thought his comments about Miller were kind of interesting and I hope that he can rise up to the occasion and play this year. I think the defense might hinge on the leadership of George this year, but the good thing is I think he did make use of using Knott as a coach. It sounds like he is a pretty hard worker too.

I don't think Broomfield, Watson, or McDonough exceeded expectations relative to hype in the spring. The coaches liked Watson and McDonough in the spring. We are young. The talent is there, but they're gonna get beat up this year. Defense is gonna struggle this year...get used to it.

The D-Line will not be better than last year. You just don't lose McDonough, Simon, Maggitt, and Laing, put in a couple of 270-280 lb freshman and improve. That's not gonna happen.

People said nice things about these guys, but I don't think anybody was calling for them to have the standout years that they had. I was delightfully surprised by how far above expectations each of them seemed to be.

Wally has said every spring that we aren't great on defense, need a lot of work, have to get better, etc. This year is no different.

You can spend a lot of time and money picking out the perfect floral bouquet for your date ... but you're probably better off checking if you have bad breath and taking the porn out of the glove compartment.

It is encouraging that he says we're faster and more athletic. I liked the "breaking in a new colt" analogy.

Wow. Cmon, think of what Wally did with the D his first year on the job. We are light years beyond that. Will it be a step back this year, most likely. But let's not throw away the season based on a few comments made in spring practice for goodness sakes.

I think I have an idea of what Wally can do, but I don't want to put the weight of the world on the poor guy. Nobody thinks we're going to win the B12 next year. With good coaching, ISU is a team that's going to make a run once in a while, but next year is not our year. The team will be coached up by great coaches, and they have great senior leaders in Washington, Broomfield, Scott, and George, but they will still struggle on defense. You don't just walk into Mordor minus Jake Knott and AJ Klein.

Buck up, we haven't lost a game. Let's see what they can do before we start capitulating.

Its still early and they will work hard to correct mistakes. We are very young and its not like we are the only team dealing with it.

Well, ok. We aren't going to win the conference. I think with all the young raw talent on D, a young QB that showed some promise, and a new offensive philosophy, expectations are all over the map. But I'm not ruling out the possibility of this being Rhoads best year yet. The defense has always outperformed expectations IMO. If we could just field an average Big XII offense maybe we could get to more than 6 regular season wins. With all the unknowns this year, I think someone could justify a lot of different outcomes this year.
