Not a very comforting interview from coach Burnham. Of course we all know DT is a concern, but after listening to him, it sounds like a big weakness.

Does not give me a warm fuzzy. They are the best we have....big and athletic...are they motivated and tough though....

Re: CFTV: Shane Burnahm update on young DT's

Trying to think of the worst possible thing you could have, and having DTs who get pushed around or aren't disciplined who are RS Freshmen seems to be just about the worst thing I can think of. I'm sure there is just as much shot that they surprise and play better than their age as there is that they are completely overmatched, but that is not comforting.

Hopefully he is just motivating them and trying to get them to understand how important it is that they work, and/or their athleticism can help make up for being light and young.

Sounds like he is just being honest. I don't get the impression that he one to sugar coat and he probably has high expectations and standards for what he wants from the young guys based on their potential.

Not much better. It is a work in progress. Needing a pep talk already? Urgency missing? Inconsistency?

Re: CFTV: Shane Burnahm update on young DT's

Don't think it was a 'sky is falling' interview, but he stressed two things: (1) 'urgency', as in practice has to be like the game is a week away, because basically it is. And (2) youth/size. I think he comments on the lack of sacks/pressure by the DL, but he coyly stated how it may be more how we employ our DLs in our overall strategy (and why he brought up the Patriots).

He brings up athleticism and cannot do it without showing a little excitement. However, he brings up needing 2 Springs to go through to be adequately prepared. Basically, we need Jrs & Srs playing more in the position. We are not quite there, but we are pretty close. Jensen, Woods, & Krick are all Jrs or Srs who will see playing time, but our younger players such as Bevins, Aka, Cousins, & Meyers (think he may be DE though) will be in the rotation as well. Even though they are a little 'lighter' than the coaches would like them to be, it is not like the past when we had 2 guys at the NG & DT position, and when we subbed to give one a break or if one went down due to injury, we brought in a DE as we had zero players capable at the position to even fill this role. Still remember Curvey's senior year, and Nick Leaders was at the other spot as a true Freshman. After that, we had 1 guy at 270 lbs and the rest were 260 or less & did not play the position.

The depth is there, it is just a little green. Come Fall it will be sink or swim. Just hope they can perform as a group & make the necessary plays - have a rotation to stay fresh (being younger/lighter) and to wear down the opposition.

That two springs thing also makes me think that Irving could have a breakout year.

Have you guys ever heard a Shane Burnham interview? He doesn't pump sunshine like Bleil and Pope do. He'll tell you what's up.

This is what I was thinking as well. I guess I am growing a little tired with some of the coach speak especially regarding the o-line.

I liked that he did talk about scoring defense which should the emphasis when the defense doesn't get much pressure.

Yeah, he is being honest and is honestly telling us that he thinks that our DTs are not very good right now. Not that they aren't good for their age, just that they are not good for a Big 12 caliber team. He was elated when they weren't getting completely manhandled in spring ball. That worries me.

If he is that worried, I am that worried.

If they are getting manhandled in spring ball maybe the o-line is better this year. That might be a good thing.

Even so acknowledging the use of past smoke blowing, he still sounded like it will be a long season up the middle...
