I think he had pretty terrible jaw cancer at one point, if I'm not mistaken. Sorry to hear though.

oh yeah, for like 10 years or something. Had to remove part of his jaw a few years back. Saw this on twitter about an hour ago - it's sad, he just announced yesterday that he would be taking a leave of absence due to cancer in his leg or something.

Close. Salivary gland cancer that got into his jaw. I believe his cancer was in the lingual and sublingual glands (I may be wrong), which is not good.

Salivary gland cancer is incredibly rare (although it was also publicized recently when Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed away of it), constitutes less than 1% of cancers - so it doesn't get a lot of research money. It usually metastasizes to either the brain or the internal organs in the chest.

anything that hits glands (especially lymph) seems to just be the worst because it ends up everywhere.

Yeah, it's all pretty closely linked. It's usually a little better if you have a salivary gland cancer in the parotid gland (on the side of your face, near your ear), such as acinic cell. That gland is pretty well encapsulated, and so removal of it can oftentimes get all of the cancer (but definitely not always). The lingual and sublingual are more likely to metastasize, I believe.

I loved the way he opened his review of "Silent Hill"

I had a nice conversation with seven or eight people coming down on the escalator after we all saw “Silent Hill.” They wanted me to explain it to them. I said I didn’t have a clue. They said, “You’re supposed to be a movie critic, aren’t you?” I said, “Supposed to be. But we work mostly with movies.” “Yeah,” said the girl in the Harley t-shirt. “I guess this was like a video game that you like had to play in order to like understand the movie.” I guess.

RIP Mr. Ebert. Thank you for watching all the bad movies so we wouldn't have to.

Sad to hear. I grew up on Siskel and Ebert. Seemed to do a good, fair job at reviewing. RIP

What exactly was that studio made out of that both Ebert and Siskel died of cancer?

    Re: Roger Ebert passes away

When Roger loved a movie, he really championed it. But when he hated a movie, that usually led to some his best writing:

    The Brown Bunny
"I had colonoscopy once and they let me watch it on TV. It was more entertaining than The Brown Bunny.

    Battlefield Earth:
"Battlefield Earth is like taking a bus trip with someone who has needed a bath for a long time. It's not merely bad; it's unpleasant in a hostile way."

    North:
"North is one of the most unpleasant, contrived, artificial cloying experience I've had at the movies.
I hated this movie. Hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering, stupid, vacant, audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by it's belief that anyone would be entertained by it."

    R.I.P. Roger....
