    The Antikythera Mechanism

Video: Ancient Computer | Watch NOVA Online | PBS Video

I watched this last night and I can't stop thinking about how remarkable it is. I've never seen or read anything that goes this in depth to "unlocking it". It looks like they've been able to give credit to the design to Archimedes himself. The genius of Archimedes to me is mind-boggling.

So often I dismiss the technological prowess of the ancients and this is another reminder that there were intellects back then superior to our greatest living intellects.

This dude devised gears to mimic elliptical orbits and nine year cycles, in 70 B.C., wtf?!?

Yeah, Archimedes was amazing. He supposedly invented a giant crane arm that they used to lift Roman ships partly out of the water which caused them to sink when they tried to attack Syracuse.

Edit: And I just watched it and that's all covered in the doc too.
