    Also regarding the 1997 season

This may have been covered in years past but I was too young to recall.

We went 3-8 DMac first year the. 2-9 and 1-10 in 1997. How close was he to being fired after that year?

Nowadays if a coach has that record after 3 years they don't last a 4th.

Wow. I wasn't a big sports fan back then, but 6-27? That's terrible.

I would hope that Pollard would have canned Chizik if he had gone 2-10 in his third year, but I doubt he would've.

the record got worse but it seemed obvious to me the program was improving at the time. It was that bad when he took over in 95.

I was in school at that time, and I don't remember any conversations about him being fired after the '97 season. Of course, that was before the message board era, I'm sure a CF in '97 would have been all Fire Dan all the time.

Off topic, but could you imagine CF during LE's time here? Or Twitter? In the immortal words of Jim Ross, "MY GOD!"

ďUrgency,Ē Rhoads said. ďThatís exactly what I told our staff. Itís exactly what I told our players. Urgency in getting your job done. Thatís in a 100 percent rate of speed at executing your responsibility ó whether itís a fit, whether itís a tackle, whether itís a route, whether itís a cut-off block. Everybody needs a little bit more urgency in coaching and playing.Ē

If he had not beaten Iowa in '98 he probably would have been gone.

There was no conversations about it, Mac had Gene Smith's full support.

This is 100 percent true. Had the opportunity to play golf with Gene in the summer of 96 with my dad at a Cyclone Club outing. Gene basically told our best ball group that Dan was given at minimum a 5 year pass regardless of record. He said the program was in that bad of shape when Dan took over.

I was just going to say, that I felt, without any inside information at all. DMac had at least 5 years to get something done at ISU. Then, when he started beating Iowa, he was set for a while.

If I remember right, he would have been starting to feel pressure if they didn't make that first bowl game.

You are correct - I don't think that some of hte younger posters realize just how bad it was at the end of the Walden years.

Pretty sure it was agreed it would take at least 5 years just to get the team to LOOK LIKE it was division 1. The physical mismatch on the field was incredible.

Re: Also regarding the 1997 season

If I have this right, these are the records of the five years leading up to McCarney taking over:

    4-6-1
    3-7-1
    3-8
    3-8
    0-10-1

McCarney's first game was the "Doughnut Bowl" when ISU beat Ohio, another Div 1 team that had gone winless the previous year. Also remember that the years you are talking about saw the emergence of Troy Davis who was doing miraculous things rushing the football. This gave ISU fans something to cheer about even if they weren't getting a lot of wins.

McCarney's teams were on par record-wise with the teams the previous years and there were causes for hope in those teams.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldnít get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

Re: Also regarding the 1997 season

    (1) Even though the record was declining in number of wins, the product on the field and the program was getting better. It was noticeable.

    (2) We had Troy and then Darren, so even though we were losing, it was a fun team to watch.

    (3) There was actually a message board site, FansOnly, that some of us old timers can trace our time back to. And there were people that were thinking McCarney was a mistake by the 1997 season. Definitely still a small minority though. He had pretty broad support.

    (4) Beating Iowa in 1998 to end the 15 year beatdown gave DMac all the support he needed.

Re: Also regarding the 1997 season

Also remember, the Big 12 came into being in 1996. Iowa State started playing the Texas schools. Granted, when talking about '96 and '97, ISU played ATM and Baylor. (In fact, Baylor was the only win in '97)

    Just another factor to consider.

Re: Also regarding the 1997 season

I remember people asking Gene Smith about his job status and Gene would indicate that the record didn't reflect the year over year improvement that was happening with the team. There were a few rumblings, but Gene felt the program was improving...even with a worse record. I can remember thinking we were close to turning a corner as well even though we only won 1 stinkin game.
