Curious what other people call this sandwich:

ground beef, tomato sauce, onions, other spices.

When I was growing up in SD, we usually called it a barbecue, but if anyone said Sloppy Joe there was no questioning what they were talking about. When I went to ISU, I heard it called a Made Rite for the first time. Another name was loose meat sandwich. When I went to USD, I heard it called a Tavern for the first time. That really threw me for a loop, but it seems this is pretty common nomenclature along either side of the SD/NE border. What do you call it? One of these or something else?

I would lean toward Sloppy Joe, but I think of a Sloppy Joe as being made w/ some sort of bbq sauce not tomato sauce. Always thought a Maid Rite was ground beef and onions/spices but no sauce cooked into the meat.

From a Minnesotan's perspective that is a sloppy joe.

Yeah, general term to include recipe variations. I make it with ketchup and mustard. Good point tho. I guess I assumed on the Made Rite--never really ate there.

Back in the 50's and early 60's they were called "Quickies" in Council Bluffs and Omaha. I knew of two stores that sold them.

Re: Curious what other people call this sandwich:

That's a super (souper) burger not a maid rite. A maid rite is the same as a loose meat, ground meat bound only by condiments. A barbeque presumably has a sweet component. Never heard of a tavern, though I'm willing to try one.

I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.

Yeah, people in NW Iowa call them Taverns.

I call them equally Maid Rite and Sloppy Joe. My Grandma in Minnesota calls them BBQ's.

I am also from Minnesota (the southern region) and I grew up calling it a barbecue. However if someone called it a sloppy joe, I knew what they meant. I had only heard the other three when I moved to Iowa.

My family has called it either BBQ or Sloppy Joe.

A Maid-Rite is just the loose meat and onions. You can follow this link (HAZZLE DAZZLE: 09/24/2012 | WHOTV.com) for a good description of a Maid-Rite.

We know what Adam Sandler calls it:

Chuck Lidell: I paint my toenails with pink and black polish. Problem is, I get more paint on my toes and on the carpet than on my nails. Any advice?
Maria Sharapova: Don't you beat up other guys for a living? I don't know how to answer this.

Loose meat, no tomato, no mushroom soup, just home town goodness you finish with a spoon.
