Who does your family cheer for??

After hearing about ruxCYtable's dad passing away (which I'm sad to hear about), it got me thinking about family and who they cheer for.

I grew up a Hawk fan. My grandma was a huge basketball fan. It wasn't until a year before she passed away I started cheering for ISU. Mainly because of Fred Hoiberg and watching him play. My two brothers are HUGE Hawk fans and we have been in several arguements over facebook and twitter about ISU/UofI. My mom went to ISU so she cheers for them strictly.

But my dad.... He grew up loving Nebraska football and Hawkeye Basektball. Once I started cheering for ISU and eventually went to school there I noticed he started becoming a fan. But he still likes the other two teams. Many times he will wear a Cyclone cap with a Hawk jacket and Nebraska t shirt. I always wondered if he does that to prevent conflict between us kids. He will go to several ISU football and basketball games during the year along with Iowa games with my brothers.

Does anyone else have that dynamic in their family?? I asked him many times while at games which he liked more and he always says all 3 and none more important.

All Cyclones in my family. My uncle works at the U of I, but he went to ISU so he still roots for the good guys.

My dad is a big Iowa fan. I bring him to the football game when it's in Ames and he brings me to the MBB game when it's in Iowa City so we do one rivalry game together each year.

Re: Who does your family cheer for??

Great Grandma was a huge nebraska fan. They owned a beer distribution company in Lincoln. Employed football players. Dad was born in lincoln and grew up a Nebraska fan. My parents went to ISU and a couple uncles went to Iowa. Most went to ISU though. Grandpa was on the athletic council at ISU for a while, have his ring from it. So a mix of ISU and NE, with a little iowa thrown in. I think my parents cheer for Iowa when not playing ISU.

Have relatives that went to ISU, UNI and Iowa so all three pretty evenly split.

Re: Who does your family cheer for??

My grandfather was born and raised in Stacyville, Iowa, and was a huge Hawkeye fan. However, my father was born and raised in MN, and is a huge Gopher fan. I was raised in Cedar Rapids, and loved the Hawkeyes, until I decided where I was going to college. Now I can't stand the Hawkeyes, but the Gophers have a special place in my heart.

My longtime gf's family are entirely hawkeyes though.

Immediate family is all Cyclones except my brother who, for no good reason at all, is a hawkeye fan. My wife's family is also all dedicated Cyclone fans. Lucky me

Re: Who does your family cheer for??

My Dad's whole family went to USC and he is a huge USC fan. He played football for Long Beach State though back when they had a football team. Mom and her side of the family weren't big into sports so they didn't really care.

When I first came here back in 2009 my dad was really impressed with the fans of Iowa State and even though we were 2-10 in 2008, fans still packed the Jack. I would say my dad is still a USC fan, but cheers for Iowa State and has more ISU apparel than USC. My mom loves ISU and says in her next life she is coming here.

Re: Who does your family cheer for??

First-gen Cyclone, parents were never into college sports teams (being WIU grads, I don't necessarily blame them). We've passively supported the Illini before, but never watched. Only team we did watch ever were the Cubs.

Since I've gotten into sports more, my family's picked up on it as well. Proud to say I brought them into the fold. They still don't watch many games, but they've started catching a few here and there.

I married into an Ohio State family. Went to Dayton for the game in hopes that I would forever reverse the bragging rights. Hate Craft! And the ref who called the charge!

Re: Who does your family cheer for??

Mom and Uncle went to ISU. Dad isn't a sports fan. My little sister was basically raised by die hard hawk fans so she was converted to the dark side, but once she is old enough to visit Ames by herself I am going to get her back, haha.

Grandparents are ISU fans as well, likely because of their two kids attending there.

My family is largely ISU fans. I'm an alum, my mother worked for the university, my fathers father worked for the university. Had one uncle go to pharmacology at U of I; he roots for both(goes to lots of isu games since he lives in Ames). My wife's family are HUGE hawkeye fans(I think it kills them my wife and kids are cyclone fans)... I converted my wife to the good side. All four of my kids have found a love for CY("hurkey is a turkey, cy is my guy" can often be heard from them. We have one on the way that i presume will be a cyclone as well(he/she better be).

Re: Who does your family cheer for??

my family is a bunch of Drake nerds. They kind of just talk ***** about both Iowa and Iowa State. My mom and dad are hardcore ISU fans, but my sisters are KU fans. All of us cheer for Notre Dame. I know, I know.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.
