Moist. Slacks. Crevice: Why do we hate certain words?

Slate: The phenomenon of word aversion

The gist, for those who donít want to read the entire piece:

    • Word aversion is marked by strong reactions triggered by the sound, sight, and sometimes even the thought of certain words .... ďNot to the things that they refer to, but to the word itself.Ē Participants on various message boards and online forums noted serious aversions to, for instance, squab, cornucopia, panties, navel, brainchild, crud, slacks, crevice, ointment and fudge. (Itís also different from dislike of jargon or the misuse/overuse of words).

Ointment would probably make my list, along with brethren, spittle, muck, gestation, brisket and pus.

    Anyone else?

Re: Moist. Slacks. Crevice: Why do we hate certain words?

my brother once told me that he didn't like the word "buttocks," like he just had an aversion to that particular word. He was perfectly comfortable with all of the other permutations and synonyms of it, but just disliked that particular word. He was concerned that it was weird of him to think that way. I assured him that "Yes, yes it was."

I don't know if this counts, but I have a problem with the way "Dr. McGillicuddy" (the Scnapps brand) is spelled. "-cuddy?" Really? Enunciate, mutha-****-er. Come on!

Ironic, then, that you call out Dr. McGuillicuddy for not enunciating whilest you utilize "mutha-****-er" instead of "mother****er".
