    Self's sideline manner

I was really amazed how differently Self behaved during the tourney vs. Big 12 play. Very calm, didn't question calls, acted like he was almost, well, Fred Hoiberg.

I think the Big 12 officials should ask themselves why Self acts like a jerk screaming at Big 12 officials and acts like a smiling gentleman in the NCAA tourney. I think a couple of quick Ts when he goes into his act early in Big 12 games would probably take care of the problem.

An early ejection or two would kind of throw a wrench in his strategy of freaking out at the beginning of every ISU/KU game.

That is what he deserved, to be tossed, in that tourney game. I have never seen a coach get by with so much. Fred would have been tossed with 1/4 of what he did.

Maybe Fred could have Otz or someone be his designated-Bill-Self-spaz-attack-crybaby. I'm not sure Fred is even allowed to freak out like that because of his heart. It would kind of be like a Bill Self behavior seeing eye dog.

Assistants freaking out are pretty much automatic T's, I think. By rule IIRC. I don't think they can even stand up that much.

Yeah but Fred could get a doctor's note to have Otz designated hit for him ;-) I really don't think he's medically allowed to go even 10% Bill Self whining level.

His toupee was loose last night, so he couldn't act as lively and move around as much as he usually does.

    Re: Self's sideline manner

All I wanted to say by that is justice would have been served by Self getting tossed and he didn't. I want Fred to be Fred. I like how he approaches this. 1. Complaining to the refs exists at all because coaches get away with it. 1. They do it because they believe it serves their interests. Therefore, both 1 and 2 are negative for the game of basketball. Neither motive serves basketball's interests. The refs are there to call a fair game, not arbitrate between coaches and fans and serve the interests of the privileged. Fred complains, but it is almost un-noticeable compared to what other coaches complain. Perhaps they just ought to stop the complaining and call t's quick. That would make more sense. It is like there are two shows going on, the game between the players, and the other attraction is the refs, coaches, and fan political battle. Sometimes fans seem as attracted to the second show as they are to the first. That is a pity and I think a failure on the part of the NCAA. On the high school level, coaches don't get away with near as much.

Well, they are Big XII refs he's yelling at, so maybe there's some justification.

    Re: Self's sideline manner

Self is bad, but so are his assistants. In Ames, KU had an assistant talking to the refs at every timeout. I've never seen a staff work the refs harder than Self and Co.

I've seen that before - but as long as his 'heart' isn't in it, what harm would there be?

Self is one of the best coaches in the country. Maybe if he would have reverted to his actions in Big XII play, KU wouldn't have lost in the sweet 16.

Yeah, OP does not get it. He wants the T to set tone, show his players this is a fight, but most importantly to give the referees cover later....Hell, we are living it. KU fans have droned that the penalties were called fairly equally and statistics give them that cover.....as has been presented ad nausem, fouls or no-calls in the last two minutes are google-exponentially more important than a Technical called in the first 2 minutes of a game. Any normal human, homosapien, or even martian coming from another planet would think that KU and Self kind of over-played it in our game in Ames....I mean the audaciousness of Oneill's bias is beyond a reasonable doubt and the early T can be seen as just freaking theatrics setting the stage for them to help KU later and then cry "It was fair!!!"
All that said.....We had Tim Floyd doing the same damn thing for us and we loved it. I did anyway. Love LE too. I think I hate on Self less than I do the Big12 refereeing complex that has systematically allowed KU basketball to become what it has.....a shameful disgrace.
