Will DSM ever get to host NCAA Men's BBall Tournament

With the success of wrestling, any chance of this? Arenas not that full last night.

As has been posted in the other 20 threads, and stated by media and experts, not enough hotels and there are to many other choices to consider. With wrestling, Des Moines was one of a few options that make sense

Th hotel thing is a huge hang up, but not the only issue. Des Moines isn't presenting themselves well, but I believe that they will overcome it and host one within a few years.

The wrestling was a great test, the operation was fantastic, but the coaches hated it simply because they didn't take down the hockey walls and it made it too crammed to get around..... Not sure who thought that one through.

Are the arenas ever full for Sweet 16 games? I'd think they wouldn't be unless a team is playing that is fairly close to home with a good travelling fan base.

I'll put $20 on the city of Des Moines hosting a 1st and 2nd round within the next 5 or 6 years.

From all the reports I have read both WNCAAs and Wrestling have been a success and the NCAA folks are very happy and confident in the city's ability to host events.

Re: Will DSM ever get to host NCAA Men's BBall Tournament

According to an article yesterday, the NCAA is going to give more consideration to locations that offer to host multiple events, thus assuring a better chance for all sports to get good venues and better exposure.

Central Iowa, (Des Moines), has shown it is capable of putting on such events, and I'm not sure the statements about hotel/motel accommodations are true. I've heard and read that Des Moines meets all the criteria needed to be considered.

The only negative I can see right now is the mediocre attendance for the NCAA track and field at Drake. The athletes loved it, so that could work in our favor.

Bottom line, as usual, it's all about the money, money, money, so if the powers-that-be determine it to be profitable, it'll happen. BloodyBuddy makes a good point about attendance at some sites. It makes more sense to sell out arenas in areas that are excited about the events no matter who the competitors are, than to stage "home games" for top seeds that go bust if they aren't seeded in that bracket.

As usual, with the NCAA, it's not really about what's good for the schools and fans, it's about the almighty dollar. Since they essentially answer to no one, it can take a long time and a lot of pressure to institute changes, (i.e. Div I f-ball playoffs), even if they make perfect sense.

Perhaps Des Moines and/or others need to threaten to file restraint of trade or other charges if not seriously considered... The courts seem to make the NCAA tremble just by mentioning them.

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing right!!

Wells Fargo is a new arena. But if they built an arena I wish they built a better arena. Now I know arenas worse than Wells Fargo have hosted NCAA games.

Register's been hitting this topic hard over last couple of weeks. Many articles including this one...:

ould Des Moines host March Madness?
Willingness to host multiple events will carry more weight

    Chances improving for men's hoops?
The new scramble for NCAA events also could accelerate the chances of Des Moines landing a men’s basketball regional.

Events Center general manager Chris Connolly said last week that a proposed anchor hotel near the arena is likely all that separates the city from being an even more viable candidate to land a piece of March Madness.

Wells Fargo Arena — which can hold about 17,000 fans — easily qualifies for the minimum seating requirement of 10,000, which is down from the old standard of 12,000.

“We’re in Boise, we’re in Dayton, Salt Lake is a little larger, Austin is around there, Kansas City is around there,” said Lewis, comparing attendance capacity to current NCAA men’s basketball sites. “There’s no reason (Des Moines) couldn’t put in a competitive bid.”

Last week’s wrestling championships clearly improved the image of Des Moines in the eyes of top NCAA officials

Hotels are an issue, and so is just breaking into the rotation the first time. A bit of an old boys club.

Attendance/capacity has almost nothing to do with Des Moines' situation, despite what the conspiracy theorists will try to tell you.

I've heard one of the biggest attractions to central IA is the value of the dollar. People, Rentals, Space, etc. Is considerably less expensive in the plains than on the coasts.

I'd be surprised if they didn't sell out, at least the first time they were here, because of it would be the first time, and the desire for the event to go well for future consideration to hold other events.

They won't host a Sweet 16/Elite 8. Its going to be opening weekend, and most of those games struggle to half full.

Re: Will DSM ever get to host NCAA Men's BBall Tournament

Yes, given the success that Des Moines just had with wrestling. If Des Moines can manage wrestling, then it can handle the NCAA opening weekend (wrestling teams/people require way more hotel space). Everyone I talked to has said they had a great time at wrestling, and the fan fest stuff was awesome.

The other cities in the region are tough competition, but it is only a matter of time.

I don't think is it hotels (plural), it is hotel (singular). Get the proposed attached hotel built and that takes one (and from what I keep hearing...the biggest) obstacle out of the way.

BTW...there is currently 2 hotels under construction in downtown (Hampton Inn & Residence Inn) and at least two more proposed. There is no shortage of hotel space holding back the tourney from coming to DSM.
