    Funny Story about The Mayor

Thought I'd share a funny story about Fred being called "The Mayor." (Funny to me, anyway.) In college I had a law class that was taught by the former mayor of Ames, Larry Curtis. He's a really nice guy, and was the mayor of Ames during the time of Fred's days at ISU. He told us a story one day about how he lost his finger. He is missing the index finger on one of his hands, and said he had it chopped off by a snow blower after a big snow storm. He told us that he ran into the house and told his wife to call ahead to the hospital and let them know he was on the way and that he had cut his finger off. Well, apparently she didn't say his name, all she said was "the mayor is on his way, he cut his finger off!" When they got to the hospital, a team of doctors and nurses met them at the door, and all of them were relieved to see that it wasn't Fred. He said at that moment he knew who the true Mayor of Ames was. As true now as it was then!

True story, I wonder if Mr. Curtis is still using the same tests?

Business law, FTW! Thickest book I bought, while at ISU. His story about Helen Hunt's dog getting loose was also entertaining.

I had larry curtis for business law 20 yrs ago and he was a riot. He'd present a scenario then ask a naive student, "wadda ya do?" After the kid would stumble around for awhile larry would yell, "no you don't, you sue the bastard!" Made me laugh every time.

Re: Funny Story about The Mayor

I took his class with John Glotfelty. He was a football player who was a big star at Ames High, so Larry always tried to ask him a question every class. He'd stop what he was doing, look out into the audience, and say "You out there, Glotfelty?" John must have realized that Larry was going to pick on him, because I don't ever remember him NOT being there to answer the question.

And "Sue the Bastards"? Words to live by.

LOL - I forgot about that, but I do remember hearing the TV crew talk about it and then when I was older and had Curtis for class he did indeed tell the story often.

Now, imagine that story in Minneapolis if he took the Minnesota job. Mildly funny. Ho hum. Here it is part of the growing legend that is Fred Hoiberg.

I remember the class and the story...and that was 10 years ago!

Is Curtis still around teaching? Class was boring as hell but he made it about as tolerable as possible.
