Thumbs up Des Moines - Best Place for Young Adults

According to Biz Journals' 2013 rankings, Des Moines ranks 8th nationally (#1 in the Midwest) for cities that are best for young adults. Nice recognition and the ranking doesn't even consider proximity to Cyclone sporting events (otherwise I"m sure it would bump up to #1 ).

Best places for young adults 2013 - The Business Journals

The next two slots in the rankings of best places for young adults are occupied by No. 4 Boston and No. 5 Houston. Rounding out the top 10 are Durham, N.C.; Oklahoma City; Des Moines, Iowa; Denver and Raleigh.
The Business Journals analyzed the latest federal statistics for all 102 markets, searching for qualities that would appeal to workers in their 20s and early 30s. The study’s 10-part formula gives the highest scores to markets with strong growth rates, moderate costs of living, and substantial pools of young adults who are college-educated and employed.

A couple other rankings that recently came out also showing some lovin' for the Des Moines metro:

Des Moines, Iowa - 15 U.S. Cities' Emerging Downtowns - Forbes

This might be most impressive/least subjective. Des Moines ranked #2 nationally for economic strength (2nd year in a row) Skip to page 7 if you want to see where all US metropolitan areas rank:

Des Moines really has some good things going for it. Personally, I would not leave Denver for any of the 9 cities above it (by choice). However, I can see why it's lower than some.

    A bit broader recognition:

Des Moines ranks high on economic index

    Friday, March 29, 2013 3:11 PM
Des Moines came in at No. 10 on a BizJournals.com monthly economic index.

The index, started in August, aims to offer a monthly snapshot of the economic health of the 102 largest metropolitan areas in the country, looking at 18 statistical indicators that include private-sector job growth and unemployment.

Re: Des Moines - Best Place for Young Adults

My girlfriend and I are looking to relocate. DSM is appealing, but I think I would rather move to KC because of the added culture (food) and access to pro sports and nice venues. DSM is economically healthy, which is nice for young professionals. But what is the point of making money if you always have to travel to spend it?

I really wish DSM would be more progressive for entertainment options. Omaha and Minneapolis are two great models for DSM

Check out the new Des Moines social club. It is VERY innovative and will change DM downtown.

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

I can summarize your comments in one sentence.

You basically want Des Moines to offer you the same things as a cities of 1.3 million (KC) and 2.3 million (Minney) offer.

To which I'd respond -- That is not realistic. That said, I'd challenge your statement that you "basically have to drive anywhere to do anything". Can you give me some examples? I can provide one example: ISU games - 30-40 minutes from Des Moines. How does KC and Minny compare?
