KATZ:. After Shocka, Gophers making play for Fred Hoiberg

"1. Minnesota coveted VCU’s Shaka Smart, but his former boss, current Golden Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague, couldn’t convince Smart to come to the Twin Cities (he should know Smart is loyal to VCU) for the head-coaching job from which Tubby Smith was just fired. According to sources, the Gophers have now turned their attention to Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg and Butler’s Brad Stevens. We’ll see, but I’ll be shocked if either were to go to Minnesota. Hoiberg is the Mayor in Ames (it's his alma mater) and has Iowa State in a good place after back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances. If Hoiberg were to leave for Minnesota, the NBA's Timberwolves, not the Gophers, would make more sense. I can’t see Stevens bolting, either, with how much he loves the Butler way and working for AD Barry Collier. Stevens can have a lifetime contract at Butler, much like Mark Few has at Gonzaga. If they can't convince either of these two, the Gophers may make a play for Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin. But Cronin is from Cincinnati and loves his gig, too. The only reason he might listen is if he sees the need to go to a school in a more stable conference."

Totally with Andy Katz on this, I am suprised that Teague is even trying. I guess if your Minnesota it is nice to dream. (My money is on Grant from Alabama as the Gopher new coach after the dust settles)

First rumors of Cincinnati to the B1G?

Why would the Gophs AD come out and say this? No way dreamy is leaving for MN. Everyone who knows anything about college bball knows this. I can't verify this, but I suspect the Gophs AD knows a little bit about basketball.

I'm completely shocked the Gophers haven't announced the new coach yet.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

Sounds like they like getting rejected. That doesn't exactly make them look good, although I understand the AD wanting the fan base to think he was in on really good coaches before settling for Bryce Drew.

I know Minnesota has some pretty good bball tradition but could somebody explain to me why they think, or anybody in general thinks, they have a chance at all these big coaching names? Do they have a huge budget or something?

I've never claimed to know everything about college basketball, but I just don't see why Minnesota thinks they are such a huge player that could have their pick of any coach they want. What am I missing?

They offer multi-million, unlike Iowa State.

Shaka Smart gets paid more than Fred Hoiberg.

You are confused. If Minnesota thought they can have any coach they want, they would already have the guy they want.

Shaka has been to a final4. With VCU. He has been coaching for more than 3 years. I'd hope this type of resume would result in some cash.

From Vaughn recruiting perspective, it can't hurt to essentially see Hoiball turn down the Minnesota job.

The only thing that helps us with Vaughn right now is that he's waiting until fall to decide. Which means we have time for Ol' Roy to head to the great basketball court in the sky.

EDIT: I'm not wishing for his death...just saying that appears to be the only way Vaughn doesn't go to UNC at this point in time.

From a recruiting perspective it helps to see everyone turn down the Goofs. That's why I love how Pollard handles things. Nobody knows what is happening so there isn't public rejections like what the Minnesota is having right now.

Well while I agree Fred could use a pay bump. Both him and Shaka make the same amount of money (with Shaka's extension yesterday) 1.5 mil per. I believe Tubby who has a national championship was making around 2 mil from the U of M last year. I believe we were paying Eustachy over 2 million when Natty light gate occured. With the new Big 12 TV money ISU can afford a raise for Fred. Just saying that money shouldn't be an issue.
