    Alliant gas/electric: $125 average
    Trash: $22
    Water/sewer: $30
    Mediacom internet: $45
    DirecTV: $65
    US Cellular: $120
    Total: $ ~410

    So are these high/low, etc?
I hear if you pay $40 per month for the local trash company instead of $22 for the big-name out-of-towners you can get better service. Might want to give that a try.

    Re: Monthly utilities/cell phone costs

The wife and I just switched cell phones from Sprint to Virgin mobile. Went from about $70 a month with 300 anytime minutes, NO texting, NO data or smartphones to $70 a month, 300 anytime minutes each, unlimited text and data, on the same network we were using. $500 up front costs for the phones, but we don't have to have the latest and greatest phones. The ones we have are basically simplified Samsung Galaxy S III's (it's called Galaxy Victory on Virgin)...4G capable, Android 4.1. Nothing flashy, but we're also paying about half what the 'give me the latest phone' plans are. So we'll pay back our phones in less than a year.
