    Monthly utilities/cell phone costs

    What do all of you fellow homeowners pay in monthly costs for utilities and cell phone, etc? I've been at my house for five years but really have no clear idea on whether or not we are getting ripped off. I'll make a list of my stuff and if you want to you can too, but don't have to! :)

    Alliant gas/electric: $125 average
    Trash: $22
    Water/sewer: $30
    Mediacom internet: $45
    DirecTV: $65
    US Cellular: $120
    Total: $ ~410

    So are these high/low, etc?

    Those seem reasonable. Your energy bills seems low compared to mine for MidAmerican. A lot of that depends on size and age of the home though.

    You've been in one spot for 5 years and only pay that for you Satellite/Internet? Wow, how the hell do you do that? Just switch every two years?

    Re: Monthly utilities/cell phone costs

    You gas/electric bills are incredibly low. I paid about $300 just for those two utilities at my house last month (in Chicago).

    You can get that cable and internet bill down even lower. I currently get a package that Comcast prices at ~$150 for $82.50 a month for a year. It helps that we have RCN and AT&T as local competitors. I also built my own DVR with cable card, an HDHomeRun Prime, and a PC running MythTV. While the upfront cost of building that out was high, I can also watch TV on any device in my home (laptop, phone, pc, ps3).

    How many smart phones do you have? My wife and I pay $170 a month to verizon for two phones (1 with unlimited data, 1 with 200 MB).

    Water is similar.

    Re: Monthly utilities/cell phone costs

    we are looking at switching from Cable to Direct or Dish. So I too, would like to know how the hell you got that price. We don't pay trash/sewer and since you're in a house instead of an apartment like us, your heating bill being a higher average seems what I would expect.

    Is the phone bill two phones with data plans?

    3 kids and our monthly bills are all over the map

    Gas and Electric (10 year old 2700 sq ft) is around $200 in winter.
    Water and sewer 75
    Qwest Internet- 50
    US Cellular 100
    Dishnetwork 85

    That is incredibly low for those kinds of cars. We pay about $115/month for 07 Mustang and 04 Envoy. Deductible is $500.

    I just went to the cheapest internet from about $75/month, I have the lowest DirecTV package with a bunch of new customer discounts (yes we switch every two years), and we both have smart phones but my wife gets a 20% teachers' discount with US Cellular. We are also on an older plan that is no longer offered.

    Re: Monthly utilities/cell phone costs

    If your cellphone contracts are close to expiring, going pre-paid should save quite a bit... I believe there are quite a few that offer $45 unlimited everything per phone, as well as others that allow you to have a bucket of voice/texts/data for all devices (like ting.com, although they seem expensive to me).

    Re: Monthly utilities/cell phone costs

    For comparison. I own a 1 1/2 story 1200 sq ft above ground also with a finished basement, built in 1954. I have an early model gas, high efficiency furnace, central air, new gas water heater, otherwise all other appliances are electric and a little dated. I live in a 25k community in otherwise rural Minnesota.

    Gas/Electric (on average, naturally a little higher during winter/summer months and lower in spring/fall) = $130
    Water = $19
    Internet/Cable (bundle) = $118
    T-Mobile cell x2 = $107
    Trash = $15
    Sewer = $13
