    Re: Grade the 2012-13 season

They went to the NCAA tournament and gave the Big 10 champs a run for their money in the second round. They played an exciting brand of basketball every night with a likeable cast of characters. No complaints out of me.

The only way they can get an A from me is an Elite Eight or a Final Four. I thought we had one lined up.

Finish @KU and @Texas, and don't crap ourselves @Iowa and @Tech and I would have gone with an "A- or better"

A-, exceeded my initial expectations, but... there were too many heartbreaking losses.

    Re: Grade the 2012-13 season

I really feel like B would be a grade they receive for the season. To be honest with the athletic talent we had on the team, 12 loses is way to much. Seemed like that we just never really got it all together until the final 2 weeks or so.
Fred seems to be still learning on the job which to be honest isnt a knock on him, its a holy cow when he does put it all together (offense and Def) I cant imagine wanting another coach in the country in control of this program. In the end B is probably about right, definitely not disappointed in the season but it could have been a little better, Im going to miss the seniors but in the same token Im not sure my heart could take all of those close loses again that they were a big part of (good and bad).

    Re: Grade the 2012-13 season

Depends on what you base it off from. If you base it off from expectations before the year, I'll go A. I expected to be top 5 in the league, get to the tourney, and win one game. Funny thing is my expectations were loftier than most's at this point last season or even leading up to the season. So they met my expectations to a T.

If you base if off what could have been, I still give it a B because they played their hearts out, but we were so close to sweet 16 and beyond possibly.

If we could have had a few bounces go our way over the course of the year, sure it could have been better, but if anyone tells you they expected more than this before the year, they are either a liar or delusional. So for that, I go A. Fred has exceeded all our expectations every year, and that is why I think we can sneak into the tourney next year too.

Way better than some previous coaches, that when we see the talent, we expect big things, but then lay an egg. I think you all know who I'm talking about.

B+ Could have gotten an A- if they would have finished off some teams in the regular season and received a better seed in the NCAA tournament.

    Re: Grade the 2012-13 season

B+. It was a very good season that helped advance the image of the program. This team certainly had the potential to be an A, but the fact is, most "experts" were guessing we'd end up a C- or worse, so it was a success for sure.

    Re: Grade the 2012-13 season

A-. I have not been convinced that this was an elite talent team. I think all of the pieces were good, but there was no sure-fire great player. They became a true team, which is pretty cool considering that came from so many different places. And I think they all wanted to be 'the guy'. The way they worked and had bounced back after everything that the game threw at them is a true testiment to their characters and to their desire to have a good year.

They won 23 games, won 11 conference, 1 big 12 tournament game, and 1 NCAA game. Iowa State basketball is not at a place where any of that is remotely disappointing.

3 of their losses were 2 a #1 seed. They lost by 3 to the Big 10 tournament champion without their best defensive player for 22 minutes and with a couple of late, bad calls. They lost at least 5 games in the last seconds. They didn't lose by more than 20 once all year and only lost by double digits 3 times.

It was seconds away at KU, against KU in Ames, against Texas, and against Ohio State from a crazy special season. But the fact that it wasn't crazy special, doesn't take away the fact that it WAS a great season.

Because of Fred's fast success, I think we tend to judge him a bit higher than we should. Think back to April 2010. Where did you see the program in March 2013? I would bet that you didn't see it where it was at.

    Re: Grade the 2012-13 season

I gave them a well earned B+, but until we get the defense game plan to match the offesive game plan we will continue to lose the 10+ games per year. Overall, we are in better shape after three years than I expected. I am very happy with the talent level and I am looking at going forward with confidence that CFH can recruit. While many people complain about CFH learning on the job, I think he is doing very well and I think the end of the game situations just went against us this year.

    Re: Grade the 2012-13 season

this is hilarious. ISU bball has been around for what, 110 years and we have maybe 5 seasons with 24 wins.

    I'm going with an A.
