Hoiberg: Rare consistency in back-to-back seasons

Iowa State accomplished a relatively infrequent two-season run the past two years.

It was only the third time in the 64-(plus) era that Iowa State won at least one NCAA tournament game in back-to-back seasons (and the other two overlapped to combine for three straight).

1994-96: Round of 32 both seasons
    1995-97: Round of 32 and Sweet 16
2011-13: Round of 32 both seasons

Hoiberg also led ISU to its fifth-best two-season combined winning % since 1956-58, if my math is correct:

    '99-01: .838 (57-11)
    '95-97: .718 (46-18)
    '94-96: .701 (47-20)
    '98-00: .701 (47-20)*
    '11-13: .667 (46-23)
    '85-87: .642 (43-24)
    '91-93: .630 (41-24)
    '03-05: .609 (39-25)
    '87-89: .607 (37-24)
    *Included season with losing record.

    (I think that's all the 2-year stretches above .600)

Note that Fred is involved in every one of those streaks at some point.

    Not the 99-01 streak.

I hope Fred is our Fred. Meaning he stays for 20 years, as in a movie fairytale, and doesn't become just another successful NBA coach. It's like the opportunity Lebron had and tossed it away. I hope Fred is our Fred.

Sorry, wasn't clear enough. I was thinking specifically of the 3 tournament streaks.
Then I should have said 2 of the 3.

    2 of 3 isn't bad, either.

I don't know the degree of significance of the numbers, but I thought it was interesting — it feels like we're just returning to "status quo" when actually it's already toward the high end of the stronger stretches in program history.

I can't wait for CFH to knock this one off the top of the record books.

There's a nice 4-0 record against KU in that 57-11 two seasons...and a bonus win the year before for five in a row.

What I wouldn't give for five straight against KU after the travesty this year.

In general, it just feels really good when ISU athletics post a winning conference record (Big 8/XII). Think of the times we have felt really positive about things relative to football or basketball. These "golden eras" coincide with above .500 records in conference. Winning conference records are an extreme rarity in football and only slightly less rare in Men's BB.
