Toughest Wrestling Conference is the Big XII

Once again the Big XII was the toughest wrestling conference around. Here's a breakdown by conference of All Americans and National Champions. The percentage numbers are the percent of wrestlers in the conference that achieved AA or Champion status. Since the conferences have wildly different numbers of teams I feel that's a better way to compare them. The Big 10 may have had twice the number of champions as the Big XII, but they also have three times as many teams.

    Code:
    +---------+----------+-------+-------------+----------+
    | - | # of AAs | % AAs | # of Champs | % Champs |
    +---------+----------+-------+-------------+----------+
    | Big XII | 12 | 30.0% | 3 | 7.5% |
    | Big 10 | 29 | 24.2% | 6 | 5.0% |
    | MAC | 11 | 13.8% | 0 | 0.0% |
    | ACC | 8 | 13.3% | 0 | 0.0% |
    | EWL | 5 | 8.3% | 0 | 0.0% |
    | Pac-12 | 4 | 6.7% | 0 | 0.0% |
    | WWC | 3 | 6.0% | 0 | 0.0% |
    | EIWA | 6 | 4.3% | 1 | 0.7% |
    | So-Con | 2 | 2.5% | 0 | 0.0% |
    | CAA | 0 | 0.0% | 0 | 0.0% |
    +---------+----------+-------+-------------+----------+
30% of the starting lineup of Big XII schools were All Americans this year, and 7.5% were National Champions. And that includes a hapless West Virginia team that only had one qualifier and no All Americans. The only conference to come close was the Big 10, with 24% and 5%, respectively.

Also - while the champions were grouped almost entirely into two conferences that is a little misleading, almost every conference had at least one wrestler make the finals on Saturday night and there were very tight matches where they just didn't happen to come out ahead.

Re: Toughest Wrestling Conference is the Big XII

Interesting breakdown, although I think the title of your thread may be a little misleading. I would call the Big 10 the "toughest" conference considering they basically have the same percentage of AAs and NCs as any conference except the Big 12 (and I'm sure statistically these are not significantly different), plus they have many more teams. The Big Ten Championship is probably the toughest tournament to win besides the national tournament.

What would be "tougher", winning the Big Ten or Big 12?

That said, good to know that our conference is still performing, despite losing some good schools in Missouri and Nebraska (and adding WVU as you note). Doubt you'd be able to convince any Hawkeye fans this, but it's certainly relevant.

Big 10 is best wrestling conference and it's not close. They have the money and the team participation. The gap is just going to grow as well.

Re: Toughest Wrestling Conference is the Big XII

If you take a random match in the Big XII vs. a random match in the Big 10 it is much more likely that the Big XII match will include an All American, and even more likely that the match would be between two All Americans.

The average wrestler in the Big XII is better than the average wrestler in any other conference.

The title wasn't which is the "best" conference. There are lots of variables you can look at there and lots of arguments to be made. The title was "toughest", because it is tougher to win your average match in the Big XII than in any other conference. You can certainly argue that the Big 10 is the "best" wrestling conference and I probably wouldn't disagree with you. But you can't claim they are the toughest.

The Big 10 would have needed 7 more AAs to have the same percentage as the Big XII.

I don't see how you can say this after seeing those numbers. Yes, the Big 10 has more teams/wrestlers but the Big 12 has (basically) the same % of quality (i.e. AAs and champions) wrestlers.

This was an excellent troll job on the Big Ten. Love it.

This seems like the fairest way to state it, or, that the overall quality of the average wrestler in the Big 12 is as good or better than the average wrestler in any other conference. But as another has pointed out, the key is whether this will be accurate 5-10 years from now. Or just like SEC and B1G football, will there be a definitive trend of quality to a geographic area in the US?

I know he is just trolling but it brings up a somewhat valid point. How valid is the bold statement when a large percentage of the AAs are from the same team (or two)?

ISU was right on the average, with 30% of the team achieving AA status.

Remove the top team from the Big XII and it drops to around 17%, remove the bottom team instead and it jumps to 40%. Remove the worst team from the Big 10 and it only jumps to 26%, still well below the whole of the Big XII with WVU included.

If you want to play that game though - take out the top team of any conference and the percentage drops. Take out the bottom team and it goes up. Remove Minnesota from the Big 10 and it drops to 21 AAs or 19%. Remove Missouri from the MAC and it drops to 8%, and so on.

Re: Toughest Wrestling Conference is the Big XII

Or for a better comparision, remove the top 1/4 of the Big 10 (which would be comparable to removing Oklahoma State, the top 1/4 of the Big XII) and you are left with 12 AAs for 9 schools, or 13% of the wrestlers. As I posted above do the same for the Big XII and you have 17%, still significantly higher.
