    Tubby/Rashad V

Reports are that Tubby Smith was officially fired.. Good for U of M because he really wasn't a great coach imo. Does this help our shot with Rashad? This could be a big shot at their ability to land the hometown kid.

Oh really? Source? I checked the Star Tribune, etc but didn't see anything yet.

    EDIT: Found it:

Hopefully Shaka Smart doesn't rejoin the AD that hired him at VCU since he's AD at Minn. now.

Was just thinking the same thing. Shaka could still reel him in because of his national exposure already.

    Re: Tubby/Rashad V

If Shaka Smart went to a Power 6 school would change his style? He would be able to get the bigger recruits/better shooters and not need to rely on havoc ball as much would he?

“They're very, very hard to guard,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said. “They're really good. And with Niang in the middle kind of wheeling and all those guys spreading you out, they're kind of a nightmare matchup. And they're men. They're really men.”

    Re: Tubby/Rashad V

It will depend on who they hire to replace him. I'm not sure Smart plays a style that would really entice RV, but I may be wrong.

Also, I see Kentucky, UNC and KU as our main competition anyway. I feel if it comes down to UM or ISU, we win that battle and I've felt that all along.

If the Gophers hire a good coach, like Shaka Smart, I don't see how that helps our chances.

Uncertainty, that's how. Plus, the fact that any kids coming in would have to learn a new system, which may not be the system that had them interested in MN to begin with.

Am I the only one that thinks Kentucky is out too, just because they already have SOOOO much talent coming in and you'd be lucky to see any playing time? Even assuming that 4-5 guys leave in 2014...they have a ton waiting in the wings.

UNC is our #1 foe - but it certainly helps they lost in the same round of NCAA as we did. And have much less press about them and their coach right now.

    I still like our chances.

Not sure a new coach can make up enough ground to make Gophers serious factor for Tyus Jones, Rashad Vaughn or Reid Travis.

That's a big question. Would havok ball work as consistently well in a Power 6 conference? I'm not sure it would. It kills against the A10, because most teams don't have enough athletes to beat it. In the Big10 many of the teams have enough athletes and good enough coaches to figure it out at least some of the time. Look at what Michigan did with limited time to prep.

I think Shaka could win anywhere but it wont be as easy as it is at VCU. He will probably need a year or two to recruit to his system anywhere he goes as well.

Takes a certain player to play for Shaka. He makes them press 40 minutes a game...tons of conditioning.
