ISU & Iowa basketball programs going forward

I like the future of both programs at this point. I think Iowa definitely goes in with the favorite as the better team next year and they should be even better in two years so ISU would really have to improve to be better in either of those years. I think both programs look to be in a positive position also.

But without the normal ******* match between Iowa & ISU fans, what % of ISU fans that would trade places for the basketball program assuming a long term Hoiberg and long term McCaffrey tenure? I think higher % of Iowa fans than ISU fans would trade places if they were honest. I estimated on a Hawk board less than 10% of Cyclone fans would trade places with respect to basketball LONG TERM.

    What do other posters think?

Fran makes Iowa a contender, what incentive does he have to stay vs. a stepping stone? Fans ran Tom Davis out of town for sweet 16 bids.

and I am actually asking, not just trying to start a ******* contest.

It won't be popular, but I haven't completely bought in on Fran.

In the short term, Iowa State has had national publicity that Iowa and Fran can only dream of.

They might be better than they were this year next year, but we'll see.

Coach Rightway is busy restoring the hawks to what it was in the Steve Alford era. I don't think there is one cyclone fan who would give up Hoiberg for Fran. Your 10% guess is way too high

I think you're spending too much time thinking about an inferior program in a different league.

Re: ISU & Iowa basketball programs going forward

Sorry, not many fans would trade. We both have good coaches but you'd be silly to think we would now want to switch to Fran.

Weve been to two NCAAs in a row, while Iowa has been to two NITs. Sure we lose most and they return most, but do you actually know what's going to happen next year?

At this point last year, ISU was apparently entering a rebuilding year, look what happened. It's obvious to me that Although both are good coaches, Fred's player development is 10x better.

And befor you argue, look at White and Marble. White took a step back this year IMO and Marble didn't really improve.

Ejim- great improvement. Babb improved both sides of the ball, lucious from game 1 til yesterday was a 180, McGee shot less than 40% from 3 last year, this year he was the best shooter in the country, and a top 2 6th man.

Re: ISU & Iowa basketball programs going forward

I respect Fran and think the Hawks will be REALLY good next year. But I have no interest in trading places with them. As long as Fred is here this program will be good. Next year we have some unknowns but only because we'll be young. The year after next could very well be the best year yet for ISU.

There's no guarantee on the tenure length for both Fran or Fred. I fully expect Fred to coach in the NBA at some point but who's to say Fran won't move on to a better college job too? Nobody knows. All we do know is Todd Lickliter and Greg McDermott both sucked.

how many people outside of the B1G (and even then) could name the head coach for Iowa right now?

Hoiberg is all over the news right now. Going forward, I can't see why recruits would chose Iowa over ISU, unless they want to be a on a perpetual bottom-feeding team. I guess you could at least say you're in a top conference and get to play some of the best bball programs in the country.

They might be better next year.....but we get them in Hilton.

People forget we'll be solid with Niang and Ejim back....plus good guards coming in. Couple Juco bigman and if Bubu/Gibson can improve. You never know.

Re: ISU & Iowa basketball programs going forward

Why would you want to trade Fred with someone else ?
Fred LOVES Iowa State and nobody can predict the future: he might want to go to NBA, he might want to stay coaching is almamater forever.
Even if Fred says: I'm leaving 5 years from now, I'll still want to have him at ISU.
