    Kudos to your performance

First, allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kyle. I am a former beat writer of Ohio State and currently help moderate the OSU Scout site.

I watched Iowa State several times this season, and knew Ohio State was in for a fight when this matchup became official. I will be honest in saying I thought that the ISU defense, notably against dribble penetration, would give Ohio State just barely enough of a breather it needed to win. But as has happened on a few occasions, I was in awe watching the Cyclones spread the floor and shoot.

Coming from someone that watched Ohio State face several top flight offenses this year (Indiana, Michigan, Duke, etc.), the ISU spacing is as good as you'll find in college basketball this year. I'm just sorry that it has to end on this note.

If Fred Hoiberg can attract recruits to Ames, and I see no reason why he can't, the program will be in very good shape. In an era where so many coaches are concerned with athletic defenders that can defend 3-4 positions regardless of offensive polish -- or lack thereof -- it's great to see a coach that is finding real offensive talent and maximizing it.

Anyhow, that's one relentless team you got there. Thad Matta said in the postgame that during their coaches' meetings, they said they wanted to get up by at least a dozen because they knew Iowa State was going to make another run. I agree with him completely. Even when OSU got up 13, I had no illusions the lead was safe. It's just a shame that Iowa State, talent wise, was underseeded as much as they were. They didn't belong in this type of game in the second round.

Chin up and two thumbs up for your coach and your program. You have a fan that is going to be watching this brand of ball over the next several years in admiration.

Appreciate the post Kyle. Spread the word on The Mayor to any decent recruits in the Columbus area . In all seriousness though, good post.

My hate is not limited to just the Hawkeyes, I have plenty to go around for the Jayhawks and just Hawks in general.

    Thanks for the nice words.

It sucks that we came so close to winning despite not having our best defender and a starter for 22 minutes. Iowa State certainly proved they were a good team.

Thanks. You've got a heck of a team there too. We knew it would be a battle going in.

While the words are kind, these kinds of posts really annoy me. You wouldn't be seeing these posts if the roles were reversed and ISU won.

You would too. Believe it or not, there are some gracious winners out there.

    Kyle,

You know what gets me? As I walked around during the Indiana game, most Ohio State fans I talked to didn't even seem to recognize that Babb, our best defender, missed the second half. I think Motta mentioned it in his presser. Yes, we have awesome offense, but you can't overestimate the importance of losing Babb for the second half.

    Re: Kudos to your performance

I've loathed Ohio Stated for many years for a variety of reasons (e.g., former roomate, former boss). And I made the mistake of looking at the ESPN conversation page before the game where OSU fans were totally disrespecting us, saying that there was no way that we could hang with them. But it was nice to face a coach that wasn't whining about every call--no matter how obvious the play was (e.g., Bill Self, Huggins, Izzo, etc., etc.). And everything I've seen and heard from OSU fans postgame has been very respectful. I'll chalk up the pre-game stuff to ignorance and a vocal minority, and say that OSU has done itself a favor in my book.

I agree- that was huge. Pretty sure that was the reason we were in zone for much of the 2nd half, where they killed us from three, and losing the threat he poses on the offensive end didn't help either.

No, we belonged. I take this is saying we were not in OSU's league or able to complete with such a lofty seed. We were two calls away, and could have, should have, won the game.

I think he was saying that we should have been a higher seed and then wouldn't have to face a #2 in the 2nd round.

No, he's saying we were mis-seeded, and shouldn't have had to play a 2-seed in the second game. He thinks we shouldn't have had to face a team like OSU until the next round.

    Re: Kudos to your performance

I know what the guy was saying, but I don't agree with the whole 'a team like OSU' comparison. That's saying Iowa State isn't a team like OSU, and if we played some lower seed team, a poorer team, then we could have won.
