    Nebraska/Callahan getting kicked while they are down

    By an NFL writer no less...love it!

    SI.com - Writers - Peter King: Wes Welker leads long list of heroes in thrilling Week 12 - Monday November 26, 2007 10:50AM

    a. On Bill Callahan getting fired at Nebraska ... One: What numbskull gave him a contract at the beginning of this year that forced Nebraska to pay Callahan $3.1 million now that he's been let go? Idiocy. Pure idiocy. College contracts are such one-way streets, with the coach holding all the power. Why guarantee the coach that much money, when he can basically leave any time he wants to anyway? Two: On Oct. 23, Callahan said, "I have done an excellent job in every area.'' In the four Nebraska games since, this excellent coach oversaw a team that allowed an average of 50 points per game. Three: Can you believe Callahan coached a team to the Super Bowl five years ago?

    I'm sure there is a high school in Montana that is looking for a coach for it's 8-man football team.

    Thought this was pretty harsh too.

    ESPN - Wojciechowski: College football mythology - Columnist

    Nebraska is an elite coaching job

    It used to be. But now-former athletic director Steve Pederson made a critical mistake and imposed his will on a program that needed a facial, not reconstructive cosmetic surgery.

    Bill Callahan's tenure has ended. Now, Nebraska has some serious rebuilding to do.

    Pederson hired Bill Callahan, who fit like Tabasco sauce on chocolate pudding. Callahan might be a good coach, but he wasn't the right coach for Nebraska.

    Now Pederson and Callahan are gone, and so is Nebraska's one longtime advantage: an identity.

    Lincoln was once I-Back U. It was Walk-On Heaven. It was a national recruiting pipeline, stretching as far as Jersey, Florida and California.

    Now it's a seven-tractor pileup.

    Tradition is nice, but elite high school recruits from outside of Nebraska's state lines (and there aren't many of them on an annual basis) don't remember much, if anything, about Mike Rozier. They want to win. They want to be on TV. They want to play for someone who can get them a job in the NFL.

    If interim AD Tom Osborne is going to seal the gaping holes in this program, he had better find someone who understands and appreciates Nebraska's past, but more important, someone who understands the realities of its future. Nebraska needs its football identity back.
    There are other overrated coaching jobs, beginning with UCLA (everything done on the relative cheap), Arkansas (limited in-state recruiting base, psycho fan expectations), Michigan State (program sounds good on paper, until you realize Michigan and Ohio State are in your conference).

    But Nebraska was never in the same paragraph with those type of programs ... until now.

    Nebraska football can be fixed. Probably. Not too much is at stake. Only the difference between relevancy and has-been status.

    Yeah, that's too bad. I'm sure Nebraska never kicked anybody while they were down.

    Re: Nebraska/Callahan getting kicked while they are down

    The funny thing is I said it back with they hired Callahan that he was a mistake. You can't bring the west coast offense into Nebraska where hard nosed running the football has always been the norm. He completely lost his Raiders team his last season so if that team could walk all over him I wondered how he was going to handle the pressures of the NU job. Well the west coast offense failed and the black shirt defense has become the pink shirt defense or as some people have called them the green shirts as in "go ahead and score on us" defense.

    As did I. Many Husker friends/coworkers thought I was nuts. After they beat an average Michigan team in the Alamo Bowl, they felt justified he was their man.

    As illustrated this year and even much of last year, they were wrong.

    Re: Nebraska/Callahan getting kicked while they are down

    Oh yeah, we all heard the "he coached a team to the Super Bowl!" bit at that time too. Yeah he did and the next year he also completely lost that same team and was a disaster. He's always been "out there" with some of his press conferences too. It's almost like he's a kid with a chemistry set that just mixes crap together and hope he comes up with something good instead of blowing up in his face like what usually happens.

    This year, Nebraska ranked nationally:

    8th in passing offense;

    13th in total offense;

    29th in scoring offense;

    and last year, Zac Taylor was the Big 12 offensive player of the year. The WCO was working at Nebraska. Sadly, it was the defense that led to Callahan's demise.

    The only thing that could make this whole "Everyone make fun of Nebraska" situation even funnier? Hire Dave Wannstedt as the next coach.

    As much as it surprised me, the offense was working well. I still think Nebraska would be better suited to being a primarily running team. It can still work these days (see West Virginia).

    I thought their defense would struggle a little this year after replacing all four starters on the defensive line, but I didn't expect it to be as bad as it was.

    Both Pelini and Osborne are fans of the spread offense, Gill is currently running at offense at Buffalo that has alot of WCO elements to it. Nebraska currently has the weapons to do either one, unless Paul Johnson comes out of nowhere to be named HC at Nebraska, the offense will never be rushing based.

    A Husker friend of mine before the season was ranting and raving about how good they'd be. I told him they lost a big part of their team - defensive line - and they would not be as good as he thought.

    Of course, he brushed that off, listed some new guys with "potential", etc.

    Like you, I didn't think it would be this bad for them, but you gotta expect when you lose an entire defensive line unit that was pretty good, you're gonna have some growing pains.
