Who on or with this teamwas the biggest surprise this year?

As an indication of how far the program came this year, there are lots of candidates for the biggest surprise

McGee came out of almost nowhere to set the league on is ear as the best 6th man in the B12 - and lead the B12 in 3-pt shooting percent.

Ejim developed into a real stud, leading the B12 in rebounds. Had one bad spell but otherwise was a very dependable and consistent contributor.

Cliburn proved to be a very effective transfer, averaging 16.1 pts per game and 6.9 boards. He led the team in many games, especially late in the season.

Babb, no surprise, was an outstanding defensive presence on the team, but he was also an effective offensive contributor, tying for 4th (with McLemore) in the B12 for 3-pt made.

Niang surprised everyone with his presence on the floor, and the improvement he achieved as the season progressed. He proved to be one very impressive freshman. Everyone is looking for him to potentially be among the Cyclone greats before he graduates.

But to me, the biggest surprise was not a player but was coach Hoiberg. I think we all knew we had a good coach, but this year, I think he went way beyond expectation. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the team, but as others have said on other threads, it was a very successful year. FH did a tremendous job. He also has a very impressive lineup of new recruits coming in next year. This guy is building a program and doing it in a way that is attracting national attention to the Cyclones.

Well done team, but my special congratulations goes to our coach.

I think Melvin was the biggest surprise... We all knew he was a glue guy coming into the year and was under-appreciated... But I don't think people would have picked him to lead the Big 12 in rebounding this year at all. Kudos to him for a job well done.

All of them surprised me in a very positive way with their play multiple times this year. Can't pick just one.

Melvin...we knew he was good, but he really improved and his contributions were pretty automatic on the stat sheet and in effort types of plays.

Agree with McGee too...we knew he had energy and could shoot, but he really was automatic this year.

Re: Who on or with this teamwas the biggest surprise this year?

Melvin or Niang. I expected Korie, McGee, and Clyburn to play pretty well. We all knew that Ejim was a solid player, but he averaged a double double this year and I was not expecting that at all. I thought Niang would be a stud and contribute some minutes but didn't think he'd be a starter let alone be one of our best offensive threats.

If Niang improves his defense, he'll be a first team all big 12 player next year. For being a freshman and very undersized he played great defensively especially these last couple games but I think a year in the weight room and developing in the off season will be great for him

    I suppose Niang.

But just like the MVP of the team, this could legitmately go to 6 guys. They were all super important and they all improved so much over the course of the year.

I guess we can conclude it was a great year all around. But seems like Niang and Ejim are getting the nod for "biggest surprise." And they are both back next year!!

Niang didn't surprise me at all. That's exactly who I thought he'd be.

I actually think I'm most surprised by the disappearance of Gibson.

I'd agree with those who saying McGee too, we knew he could bring energy, but he really played lights out all year. He made a ton of tough tough shots.

Niang. I was excited about getting him, but he exceeded all expectations. McGee was a stud, but we all knew he could light it up from 3

Tyrus..I really didn't expect him to become a pure shooter this year like he did. That isn't the way I remembered him from last season.

    Biggest surprise? Babb.

Not one time do I remember people getting upset with him (other than getting suspended for orange juicing)

Last year, his flaw was his shooting. This offseason, he shot, shot, shot. He was a team leader and a fighter. And the only player who didnt have a thread named after him, which is a positive thing.

Positive surprise: McGee- by about halfway through the season I just assumed the shot was going to go in whenever he let it go.
    HM: Niang
Negative: Though Gibson would have a bigger year then he did.

He reminds me of a smaller, faster, smarter Horace Grant of Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan-era, first three-peat fame. He has a great touch, can rebound, is humble, creative and dependable. Ejim is my favorite player from this year.

I agree. For me, if I'm going to talk surprises, it would be how Fred reworked this team into a powerhouse again. We knew we had talent all over the place, but to put all the pieces together just right for the second year in a row is amazing. These guys all embraced their roles, and it's impossible for me to single one out. I love them all.
