There is a difference. Mauling and fouling and getting away with it being confused with good defense.
Unfortunately, this is how college basketball is now being called. Hand checking is allowed and it drives me absolutely crazy. If a foul is defined as impeding an offensive players movements towards the basket. How is pushing him in the opposite direction not the essential definition of this? I would love to see college basketball adopt the NBA's style officiating the game. I feel the college level has taken the finesse out of the game by allowing the defense do almost anything they wish.
Don't even get me started on all of these types of Flagrant fouls either... those are ridiculous
