    Re: Defense, defense, defense

I'm a skeptic still. Offense can go hot and cold but a defensive presence and mind-set is a season-long affair. I've never heard anyone say a team got hot defensively. I like what the coaches and players are saying, but I really think that other than Babb this team doesn't have a defensive mentality.

No worries - just score buttloads of points!

Nor have I. Maybe ISU could start a trend.

I think they've learned that the hard way. They may not have the most defensive ability, but I think they now understand the mindset that they need and the effort they need to put forth.

Well, that kind of answered my question. I was going to start off a thread about... "Should we begin this next game with a Press-D" Johnny Orr used to do it quite often, and it worked like a charm. I'm just a little worried about how our players will react (or not react) once our press is broken. We rarely see it, but I still think it would surprise the heck out of OSU.

    Re: Defense, defense, defense

ISU defense is serviceable. Where they've gotten in trouble was with personal fouls leading to free throws. In the two regular season losses to KU, ISU allowed them to shoot 24 and 38 free throws. OU hit 100% of 34 free throws in the game in Norman. And in all our losses, the opposing team shot, and most made, more than 20 free throws in the game. That wasn't an issue on Friday night.

Now free throw opportunities often have a lot to do with a player being out of position defensively. We did move better last night, particularly in man to man situations, away from the ball on defense and ISU got their paws into the passing lanes a lot. Our bigs also did an admirable job of establishing position in the post to keep Cooley away from the rim--Niang was leaning in like he was using a blocking sled in order to get to his spot on the floor. So we have shown the ability to do good things. It worked in large part because the referees allowed them to play.

    Re: Defense, defense, defense

There have been times this year when the defense has been good. Especially in the last few weeks. Starting with the Oklahoma State game, continuing through most of the West Virginia game, and the Oklahoma game.

If you've been watching you would know this.

Also, when TJ was on with Miller and Brinson one of those Thursdays he made a good point about how since Iowa State is limited on size, they sometimes have to concede some defense in order to have the best chance to win.

Other than the Iona game. OSU has not scored more than 71 in their last 11 games. Keep them arojnd the 71 point total and we have a shot.
