Re: Big 10 living up to the hype

I absolutely agree that Iowa played a very, very easy conference schedule.

The only point I want to interject is this, Iowa didn't choose to do so.

That's not meant to be a flaming statement.. I just think sometimes people get caught up in the scheduling thing. The schools don't pick the schedules.

They chose the part that resulted in Iowa State playing a tougher SOS than Iowa.

There lies the massive difference in this whole football vs. basketball, b10 vs. b12 argument. When ISU talks about our tough football schedules we actually have a top ten SOS in the nation almost every year now. Iowa complains about basketball SOS this year AND last year...turns out ISU had a tougher or comparable SOS both of the past two seasons in spite of their idiotic crying as ISU won NCAA games.

Fred Hoiberg has more NCAA tournament wins in three seasons than their last three coaches combined. You have to go back more than 30 years to claim they have any edge on ISU in hoops. Of course Fran will start doing things THE WRONG WAY next year when he starts a dirty thug transfer so that might turn it around for them since they couldn't make the big boy tournament THE RIGHT WAY.

    False.

RPI is a measuring stick to show who you played, not who you've beaten or what you "proved."

If ISU went 10-8 with all their wins over TT, TCU, UT, WV, and BU, their RPI would be the exact same as if their wins were all over KU, KSU, OU, OSU and BU.

RPI has absolutely nothing to do with who you beat.

It's purely SOS weighted to home and road. Who you actually beat is irrelevant.

Your talking Strength of schedule. If RPI had nothing to do with wins or quality of wins than why do the better teams in a conference have better RPI where the worse teams have bad RPI. Tech and TCU shouldn't have such low RPI in the hundreds, when they play the same conference schedule as Kansas who has a RPI in the top 20.

How can a team have a RPI of 181 and a strength of schedule of 33 if what you are saying is correct.

Because they didn't win games period and Kansas won 25+

Your RPI score has nothing to do with beating good teams. All you have to do is play them.

Re: Big 10 living up to the hype

For example, Iowa State played Texas Tech and Kansas back-to-back in February. Went 1-1 with the win against Tech and a loss to KU.

Iowa State's RPI score was X after that. If you flip flop and Iowa State went 1-1 with the win against KU and the loss to Tech, their RPI would be exactly the same.

It has nothing to do with who you beat.

75% of the RPI score is independent of anything the team does. That 75% is the same if you go 0-32 or 32-0.

The other 25% is a blind look at home/road/neutral W-L record, but NOT who those teams were.

K-State got to play a home game. Georgetown got to play a virtual home game (Philly ain't that far from DC). How'd it work out for those guys?

You still have to win the "home" games. Big 10 teams to this point have done a good job of doing that. Other schools, not necessarily.

Few of us are denying they have a good basketball league this year, I just fail to see why we need to gush over them when they continually pretend they have a decent football conference in spite of reality.
big 10 is good this year and anyone denying they are the best conference is as big a homer as the hawk fans that defend the big 10 in football. that said one good year is one good year. Over the last 10 years there has been relative parity in the 5 major conferences. Unlike football where in the last 10 years would argue the sec has been a clear leader with the big 12 a very clear second.

Don't worry guys Maryland and Rutgers will make the Big 10 a better football conference.
