Dake vs. Taylor - most anticipated champ match ever?

Figured this match deserves its own thread. Two very impressive wrestlers to watch, and one of the most anticipated matchups in NCAA wrestling history:

-Dake (Cornell) is going for his fourth national title, if he wins he would be the only wrestler ever to win four titles all at different weights (for you non-wrestlers out there, this is an amazing feat because the style differs greatly in each weight class). Nobody has scored a point on Dake in the four matches of this year's national tournament.

-Taylor (a junior at Penn State) is going for his second national title, only career losses are in the NCAA finals as a freshman, and this year to Dake. He has pinned all of his opponents in the national tournament this year, three of the four were in the first period.

-They have wrestled twice this year, one was an exhibition match and one counted on the records. Both were close matches, won by Dake, both by a score of 3-2. One of the matches can be found here 165 1st-Place-Match, Kyle Dake, Cornell vs David Taylor, Penn State | Southern Scuffle 2013 | Flowrestling

-They have known each other since junior high, and seem to be friends of sorts. Both seem very confident in interviews, of course.

A good article here following tonight's matches Taylor-Dake showdown in NCAA wrestling finals now a reality | PennLive.com

Also of interest, for the first time the NCAA tournament has chosen to have the 165 pound class as a "highlight" match of the night, putting the match as the final match of the evening (instead of going by increasing weight for each match as has been done in the past). And is televised on ESPN proper.

As an avid supporter of the sport of wrestling, I think a match like this is good timing for a sport that is in the spotlight for possible noninclusion in the 2020 Olympics. I'm glad this is being shown on ESPN live (instead of ESPN2 at 2am two days later, as it was when I was in college). If you are interested, please be sure to watch and encourage others to do, as it will help the Olympic cause to have high ratings for this event. An interesting option for the future (as a side note) may be to move wrestling outside of the shadow of basketball (an idea I fully support), further described here http://www.desmoinesregister.com/art...nclick_check=1

Regardless, this should be a great match to watch. I'd feel as confident picking a winner for this match as I would picking my basketball bracket (which was screwed on the first day), but I'm going with Taylor on this one. Hard to beat the same guy every time when it's so close, Taylor has better coaching and workout partners. But who knows. Should be awesome!

Bumping this one. It will probably get swallowed by basketball again, but Id like to put wrestling in the spotlight as much as possible.

Should be a wild match. What time do you think it might be on? I would love to spend the night watching wrestling but I dont see it happening.

    Re: Dake vs. Taylor

Dake is too good all around. He'll use his great defense to blunt Taylor's great offense and keep the match at a pace he prefers. I see Dake continuing to have Taylor's number and win a close low scoring match

It's the last match of the night. Championships start at 7 on ESPN and are scheduled to go to 10. So tuning in around 9:30 should be safe but I'd keep checking in before that just to be sure.

Agree. I don't see Dake being taken down. 3-1 Dake.

    Re: Dake vs. Taylor

I'm new to really following wrestling so I don't know too much, but from what most people are saying it sounds like Dake is the slight favorite here. I'm gonna say Taylor wins though just because hes been on a tear through this tournament. Just my hunch! I'm excited to watch!

    Re: Dake vs. Taylor

Pretty good match though personally I would have loved to have seen it decided in ot..Via sudden victory or tiebreaker. Lots of hype surrounding this bout and I hate that riding time decided the match, but hats off to Dake he deserved the win.

    Re: Dake vs. Taylor

The box score will show that it was decided by riding time, but the stalling calls against Dake were complete BS. Dake clearly deserved the win.

    Re: Dake vs. Taylor

Just got home the stall calls were BS, official wanted to incert himself in the match, I will referance the real stalling all weekend long that went uncalled, Was a good match Dake was to strong for taylor and can ride like no ones business, only bad thing about these 2 they are in a between weight for International wrestling, interesting thought what happens if Howe comes back next year and beats Taylor and he could be the best wrestler to only win 1 NCAA championship.

I don't agree. It was quick calls but refs are human and the atmosphere was utterly electric! I was honored to be in attendance.

Ftr: when did Iowa make it a requirement to have a hot head, poorly mannered, hot head on the sideline. Brands is slime.

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

NCAA weight class - 165 lbs
    74 kg = 163 lbs

International weigh-ins are commonly held the night before, and sometimes with an allowance.

This just reminds me of how deep the US is at 74kg..IMO our most competitive weight class in freestyle. I know it's a bit pre-mature, but imagine what the trials for Rio will be like...
    -Jordan Burroughs
    -Andrew Howe
    -Trent Paulson
    -Kyle Dake
    -David Taylor
    -Tyler Caldwell
I'm aware this list is subject to change from now until 2016, but just think of what three years of freestyle training will do for guys like Dake and Taylor.

    Re: Dake vs. Taylor

Press conference with Dake after the match

Such an epic match. And Dake moved up to 165 knowing that that Taylor would be a guy that could stop him from being a 4 time champ. Makes it even better. Dake saw his Owings and ran to the challenge. Then beat him 3 times.
