Near Record Low Scoring in the Tournament

    HoopsTournament.Net: Record Low Scoring?

Of course, we will bring this average up tomorrow, but there are still 5 Big Ten teams playing tomorrow.

Bad shooting. McDoormat ball where you force a shot up in last five seconds.

Follows the trend of basketball in general. Defense not being held in check by officials.

Iona, Northwestern State, Indiana, Iowa State all play today. The top 4 scoring teams. Add in Duke and Ole Miss, and it is 6 of the top 7 teams.

It is no wonder attendance is down at schools across the country. Even the "best" teams play really boring basketball.

They need to clean up what is allowed by defenses. Start calling hand checking and contact in the post and watch scoring go back up. I am sick of watching basketball as a contact sport.

They probably don't talk about it because they don't see a lot of it. Most of the "good defense" out there is just "hack away because they can't call them all and coach will work the officials; besides we've got a deep bench".

Exactly, huge difference between good Defense and what is happening most nights out there. Between the hacking thats allowed and the other big defensive strategy being taking a charge, it makes for some boring BBall.

Did you all see Montana scored just 34 in the loss to Syracuse.

I agree the Defense is a joke. Hand checking is out of control in basketball. When did that not become a foul?

I think they picked up about a third of that (at least) in garbage time.

I felt bad for them; losing 81-34 in the Big Dance is embarrassing.

Re: Near Record Low Scoring in the Tournament

Combination of many things - a lot already thrown out there, plus the skill of college basketball players & teams is not what it once was. When I say skill, I mean the skill of getting the ball through the hoop.

The college game has been diluted, mostly due to young players leaving early or jumping straight from HS to the pros. Coach K mentioned how college basketball is not being played at the same level as it was in the 1980's on the 30 for 30 piece on Valvano's NC State team.

The same thing is repeating itself that led to the changes in the game that occurred in the 1980's: team's used to 4-corner once they cemented a lead in the 2nd half / bring on the shot clock; after Valvano's run in '83, teams began to foul like mad at the end of the games to have a chance to come back when the game was prolonged / bring on the double bonus; big men were too dominant (reason why the dunk was dissallowed until the mid 70's) / bring on the 3 point shot (believe the first main conference to experiment with this was the ACC - just so happened to coincide with the time Ralph Sampson was a dominant force).

Now, the teams with less talent play very deliberate & limit possessions. More physicallity is being allowed on defense for all sides. Combined with less talent overall, and it is a perfect storm.

“I heard that Snooki, Pauly D and The Situation will each make $5 million for this season’s ‘Jersey Shore.’ It just goes to show that if you put your mind to something and work hard, you’re wasting your time.” -- Jimmy Fallon

Re: Near Record Low Scoring in the Tournament

NCAA needs to go to 30 second shot clock. I wouldn't be opposed to 8 seconds to get it across half court either. And the mugging defenses have to go, it is bad for the game.
