Why don't more teams press like VCU?

Why don't teams do this? The big time programs have the athletes to press. The Kentucky and Kansas's of the worlds have 5-star atheletes on their benches. It's so simple, yet super effective.

It seems lazy not to utilize the press. I just don't get why teams do not press more on D.

They don't have the athletes or depth for it, and if you don't, you give up all kinds of easy buckets.

I love the press, but it does have that danger.

Since we are an elite team now, let's go get that One Cyclone Moment.
Make this one for the ages!

Oops...missed your point about the teams that do. Still, against very good teams, you can give up easy buckets.

Gotta have a lot of athletes that know the press like the back of their hands. Very easy to get tired and give up easy buckets.

Much easier and a lot more successful to play solid half court defense as well.

watching VCU run this press is a thing of beauty. Be really interesting to see how that press holds up to Michigans guards.

Re: Why don't more teams press like VCU?

Presses are very difficult to make effective simply because they give up so many easy buckets. VCU is maybe only the 4th best defense in their league despite their unique style and pressure. Pressure in the backcourt is just something else you need to practice when you could be spending more time on offensive sets or half court defense. Those are a couple reasons why it's just not worth it to apply full-court pressure.

These guys have nailed it; the press is risky, because if/when the other team breaks it, an easy wide-open layup usually ensues. This is why you see it more often when teams are down and need to force turnovers compared to when a team holds a lead. It's a much safer bet to get to the other end of the court and make sure your defense is set and ready.

You need Rahshon Clark back there pressing all the time.

I hated pressing. It's way too tiring, and it's much easier to beat a press than to run an effective one.

I think ether LE or TF said this in a post game show- that they loved gambling defenses because if you execute, you get all kinds of easy buckets.

Most of the big name programs get the "Purebred" offensive player.
The ones with 5 stars boast about their shooting more than defensive skill.
VCU has made its self a home for the "Hungry" half-breeds, not pure shooter but hard working
hustling ball hawkers. Very seldom do you find the blend of hot shooter with aggressive defense.
Fred has his formula that attracts shooters, Smart goes after the angry-dog player who can make layups.
Most NBA games are dunks and three's.
Trying to get players to take "PRIDE" in defense is very challenging.

    Go Cyclones.

VCU reminds me of those good little kid AAU teams, press you all game and beat you by 40.

Remember the level of competition they are playing, and the fact Akron is missing their starting pg. I guarantee you that press won't look so effective when they encounter a team with better ball handlers.

Re: Why don't more teams press like VCU?

It sounds nice for a team that can get tons of talent, but then you get to the point that a lot of really talented players don't want to work that hard and bust their ***** to play defense even more than playing offense. That also means a lot of subbing and star players don't like that.

So you need specific athletes who are humble and unselfish and a unique coach to do it. That's why VCU is so great.

It is also probably a lot more effective at home than away without the crowd to support the team.
