Blum: Anatomy of a Deep Run

My thoughts on why recent history says the Cyclones can hang around for a while. Had fun writing this one, hurry up Friday.

Gonna be a wild ride if we make it past Friday - ND is the only team that has the time to try and gameplan for us. After that, all bets are off, other than maybe OSU who may be looking at us just in case we make it to their bracket.

Whomever comes out of the New Mexico/Arizona brackets will be done playing on Saturday. They will have coaches assigned to each team still playing in Dayton so they will have a pretty good head start on it before they even know who is coming out of Dayton. They will be able to give their players a day off on Sunday and finish up the plan Sunday night and be able to start implementing it in practice on Monday with Tuesday and Wednesday to get reps on it (with travel in there, of course).

It would be better if they had to play on Sunday as well, but regardless, I'm certain whomever it is would be ready for ISU on Thursday.

Good point - I hadn't looked at the schedule that far out, I guess. Still sticking to my theory though...we're a nightmare matchup if we're playing to our capability.

Re: Blum: Anatomy of a Deep Run

Other than the 3 ball, the thing I really like is the experience we have on the team. We do have a bunch of seniors but I think the experience of making the tournament the year before helps. Korie has had some big moments in the tourney before and I hope he leaves ISU with some memorable ones this year as well.

Re: Blum: Anatomy of a Deep Run

I love the Ali reference to "Thrilla in Manilla".

    Good stuff as always.

This team should scare the #$%* out of people because IF (Big IF) they are "on" they can beat anyone in that region. Gotta put multiple good games together in a row but hey, it could happen.

“It’s beyond pride. It’s a restored trust. There’s a confidence again, a passion that teeters on swagger. More than anything, (Iowa State head coach Paul Rhoads) has restored the Iowa State “it” factor, the steadfast belief that it is great to be a Cyclone...the man’s enthusiasm is genuine to the core...”

You read that as an old timey 1920s farmer also huh?

“They're very, very hard to guard,” Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said. “They're really good. And with Niang in the middle kind of wheeling and all those guys spreading you out, they're kind of a nightmare matchup. And they're men. They're really men.”

Nice article Blum, but Murph and Andy absolutely disagree with your (and Kirk's) take the ISU does NOT live and die by the 3. I do think it's kind of humorous though, that when they talk with CW or JW, they never bring that particular subject up.

I don't disagree with Murph and Andy. Everything Iowa State does on offense is predicated by the three ball. And they won't survive multiple poor outings. So in that sense, they do live and die by the three. However, Iowa State has shown that they can still win when they don't shoot it well because the threat is always there and teams defend them differently. Bottom line, three or no three, the Cyclones can get buckets and score a lot of points and that is what can create a sustained stay in the tourney.

    Thanks as always for reading!
