Minny loses money on alcohol sales

"I think the average Minnesotan would have a very difficult time understanding how any business could do $900,000 in sales and lose $16,000 doing it," Schoen said. "With this information, we probably need to take a deeper look."

Re: Minny loses money on alcohol sales

Their alcohol sales problems started when the IOWA FANS didn't drink enough to then have sex in the bathrooms or try to carry out a 20 ft goal post thru a 6 ft door. Appears you can't have it both ways.

Makes sense. Fixed costs which hit them during year 1 won't (shouldn't) hit them again in year 2.

Re: Minny loses money on alcohol sales

The problem with alcohol sales at TCF goes back to how the legislature approved it. They wanted it but said it couldn't be too close to the students. This means that the sales can't happen at any of the permanent concession stands so all of the alcohol sales are not convenient for any of the fans to get to which reduces sales and have to be set up in a temporary manner. This means that they have increased set up and tear down costs as well as rental costs for tents, product storage, etc. They could make money doing it but they were hamstrung by the legislators on this one.

I'm not a logistics guy but why did they buy it from Aramark and only get 22% How does this work? Why not just buy it through a distributor and keep 100% of the profits?

They have a concessions contract with Aramark. Aramark does all of the concessions, buys product, staffs stands, handles inventory, holds the liquor license. Since they already had a contract with Aramark for all concessions, it would include the alcohol when it was added. It is an extremely common model.

Most facilities pay someone else to manage concessions. Pushes liability off on someone else.

Because of what VeloClone said. It was a temporary thing and couldn't be sold in their permanent concession stands. So instead of spending $20k to add taps to their concession stands. They spent $0 on the actual selling and spent $200k on making the temporary structures look alright and for extra security.

Wow, so UM got 22% of profit. or 185k. That means that the total profit was 841k on 907k of sales. I would say that is a pretty good margin. Looks like Aramark wins....

Where the taps are located has nothing to do with the amount taken home. Aramark is contracted to do the concessions whether that's kegs out of the back of some dude's truck, a temporary tent, or a permanent concession stand.

Well I didn't know that Aramark ran the whole show for Minnesota. That does change my statement a bit.
