30 for 30 Survive and Advance tonight at 9:00

The 1983 NC State story with Jim Valvano is the 30 for 30 tonight. Im super pumped for this one. Might be my favorite series on TV.

It just ended and wow as I type this there are still tears in my eyes. Just so sad a man like Jimmy V left us so early. His speech and words probably hit me more than most considering the issues I deal with on a daily basis. Best 30 for 30 I've seen.

****** I missed it, but I couldn't miss Walking Dead. I'm hoping it will be on the internet sometime to watch it. Heard it was very emotional. My high school basketball coach always made us watch his Jimmy V's ESPY speech. What an incredible man.

Also of note from this I know the 3 point line came into play in mid 80's but at no idea in the early 80's there was no shot clock. That's insane

Thing I don't understand is some of the games in the same tournament there was a 3 point line, and some of them there wasn't?

At that time the 3 Pt. Line was an ACC experiment.

How did they do PPG nationally and everything? Just call everything a 2?

It was the 80's. Everybody was watching Scarface and driving around in a DeLorean.

Yep, it was one of the things that made NCState's title even more intriguing. I remember when they made the run through the ACC tournament, no one thought they could do it in the NCAA's because the huge advantage they had with Whittenberg and the three was gone when they reached the NCAA's.

Re: 30 for 30 Survive and Advance tonight at 9:00

Awesome 30 for 30 (only watched 1/2 of it - will finish tonight). These guys tore my heart out at the time, as Hakeen Olajuwon & Phi Slamma Jamma were responsible for me getting interested in basketball at the time. Clips of Ralph Sampson brought back some memories as well. Just doesn't seem like there are dominant players in the college game like there used to be. Suppose jumping early to the NBA (whether from HS or 1 year in college) causes that. I absolutely love college basketball, but to me it's Golden Age has passed somewhat.

I digress. The strategies Valvano used were unconventional for its time, but he left a lasting impression on the game (outside of his fighting cancer & his famous speech - which I watched live & will remember the rest of my life). Don't know if he gets the 'credit' for fouling at the end of the game to prolong it, but they used this strategy so much I remember many announcers not liking it (old school didn't like any who messed with the purity of the game).

For quite a while, there was no double bonus. Any non-shooting foul was a 1 and 1. The fouling strategy was a lot more potent then for this reason. Double bonus, 3 point shot, shot clock - all were brought in for their reasons.

Great from start to finish. 1983 had the most talented college players in the history of basketball.
