Cubs look to have signed Wood

Ask me last year and i would have said what the hell are we thinking...but ESPN 1000 just reported that the Cubs have signed Kerry Wood to a 1 Year $4Million deal..Sounds like he took a little hometown discount from what some of the other teams were offering.

I hope him and Marmol can get things done in the 8th and 9th next year and Dempster will be gone...

I just don't see how you can hire the guy when he can't stay healthy? His prime years were spent in rehabbing his body.

He pitched well last year and I think they are hoping he can continue to play setup man.

Give him a spring training and let him see what he can do next year. After you have invested major dollars in him and he is finally back why would you want to let him go. Plus he is a great leader in the clubhouse.

Re: Cubs look to have signed Wood

That's a pretty safe deal considering what pitching has cost other teams lately. If he gets hurt again then you only commited 1 year to him, if he pitches like the old Kerry Wood he's worth every penny of the $4 mil.

Just look at Cordero's 4 year $46 mil contract from Cincy was just insane and he's only 2 years removed from a blowup with Texas. In 2006 he had 11 blown saves to 22 saves which is not a great ratio but just goes to show you how 1 good year can land you a fat contract these days. Reds could have used that money better to get some starting pitching I think.

Im glad its only 1 year. I honestly was thinking it would be some 3-year deal.

EXACTLY. I feel comfortable with a 1 year deal. 3 years and I would have been scratching my head.

Wood will be looking for the 3-4 year deal at this time next year if he stays healthy and is effective in 2008. If he's limited to about 70 innings, I think he could be very good.

At that point I fully expect the Cubs to pass on him so he can go win a Cy Young somewhere else.....

Finally some action on the Cubs front. I was hoping we would re-sign hm, when a guy is as loyal to one team as Kerry Wood has been to the Cubs, he deserves one last shot.

As a Sox fan, I was really hoping we'd look at him as a RP. 4 million is a little pricey, but one year doesn't hurt. The Cubs have the money too.

    Good signing.

Hasn't it been the other way around?

Yes, yes it has. But then again, for most of the time the Cubbies really didn't have much of a choice.

My bad, ya it has been. But you can also say that Kerry has been loyal when he turned down 2 and 3 year deals with other teams to stay with the Cubs.
