The worst/weirdest job you've ever had

Does anyone have some crazy job stories, bad jobs, what-have-you?

I guess my weirdest one was when I was in high school, my first job was as a cashier at a Casey's in the town where Randy Weaver (of Ruby Ridge fame - LINK). I used to have to close the store, which was maybe not the safest idea for a 16-year-old girl who was 5'2" and 105 lbs. Usually the town police officer would come and make sure I was safe at closing.

One night, however, he didn't. And Randy stopped in, it was his last night in town before he was moving back out west. He offered to let me drive the car he'd purchased with the money from his settlement from the government. Luckily I was smart enough to graciously turn that down - much like when the Sons of Silence biker who came in regularly asked me on a date.

I worked track maintenance for the CRANDIC Railway for three summers when I was back from ISU. I always got stuck on the same group with the worst smelling dude in mankind. For lunch everday he brought a huge Playmate cooler with no ice or food. Only items in it were 10 porn magazines, 2 warm 7Ups, and 6 Hersheys chocolate bars.

spent a summer working at an egg hatchery. Having a rotten egg explode in your face is one thing. Having it happen 3-4 times a day for the whole summer, is quite another.

A week at Campus Book Store in 1999. I can and have put up with a lot in a job but was never treated as poorly by management as at that job. I went across the street and got a job at University Book Store a had the opposite experience which wound up being one of the best jobs I had in college.

I had a job with the Olfactory Lab at ISU, I smelled stuff. I have terrible allergies and a deviated septum, so I would just guess when I was smelling something.

I worked for a professional softball team. That's probably the weirdest.

The worst was probably Best Buy.

    My teams: (as of 6/15/14)
    Cleveland Browns: 4-12 - .250
    Cleveland Indians: 34-35 - .493
    Cleveland Cavs: 33-49 - .402
    Iowa State Cyclones (FB): 3-9 - .250
    Iowa State Cyclones (BB): 28-8 - .778

Re: The worst/weirdest job you've ever had

Probably my worst job was with a construction company that had a long-standing contract with GTE (a now defunct phone company). We built telephone switch stations in small towns all over the state and adjoining states.

I got sent to Nebraska, to a small town named Conrad, about halfway between Kearney and Lexington for those who know Nebraska at all. I don't think there was a paved road to the town.

Because of the tiny jobsite, I could not get a backhoe in to dig a trench for some conduit, and wound up having to dig it by hand. 3' wide x 4' deep x 12' long. It was like digging your own grave. I remember thinking, "I went to ISU to get an engineering degree so I could come to the middle of Nebraska to dig a ditch."

That moment of shining clarity moved me to start looking for a new job.

Not worst in the sense that I disliked it, but for the first three years that I worked for my current employer, I installed and sanded/finished hardwood floors. In that three years, I developed bad knees, carpal tunnel, tendinitis and ended with a back surgery that sent me to work in the office.

I worked there for 5 days once. they claimed they wanted to be on the cutting edge of things yet made cashiers ring things up by entering their prices instead of a POS system. One day during rush I charged an older man $44.95 for something when the price was really $44.99. He proceeded to hand the manager (an Asian woman, I forget her name) 4 cents and say the cashier didn't ring me up correctly.

So the older woman who owned the place came up to me, in front of all a busy checkout area and yelled at me for intentionally undercharging customers. I told her right back what I thought of her cutting edge system and if this is how they treat all employees, especially in front of customers, then she can "f- off". I was so mad I didn't bother coming back in for my paycheck and I've never put them on a resume. To this day I will not shop there because I think they are ********.

I think they may have just closed this year? I might be wrong, though.

I didn't even know some of these were actual jobs. ISU has an olfactory lab?

I opened this thread to post that exact same post. I was going to throw in some sexist, racist, and bipolar descriptions for the CBS side and agree with the UBS sentiment. Best thing I ever did was walk across Lincolnway. **** that guy.

Re: The worst/weirdest job you've ever had

I went to Indian Hills in Ottumwa before I went to ISU. For two years I worked the kill floor at Excel (hog packing plant) at nights. I worked with the USDA agents to make sure the hog carcasses were "clean".

It's odd how the human mind works, because I actually have fond memories of that time. Most of the guys and gals that I worked with weren't terribly sophisticated, but they were good folk. I made a good wage there for a student in 1993, so I had a lot of folding money.
