Redskins' Taylor shot and wounded inside home

ESPN - Redskins' Taylor shot and wounded inside home - NFL

Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was shot in the groin at his Florida home early Monday morning, police said.

The Miami-Dade Police Department is currently investigating the incident. Taylor is currently undergoing treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida, the Redskins said in a statement.

According to a report in the Miami Herald, police took a call early Monday that a homeowner had been shot in the leg.

Paramedics responded and found the victim with a gunshot wound to the groin. According to county property records obtained by the Herald, the residence, at 18050 Old Cutler Road, is listed to Taylor.

Taylor, 24, is in his fourth season with the Redskins. He leads the team with five interceptions but has missed the last two games with a knee injury.

Sounds like it hit his femoral artery and he actually might not make it...

No crap? I loved Sean Taylor. Huge guy at the safety position. Hope he pulls through.

Yeah, I just heard an update on the radio saying he was in very serious condition. Bad deal.

...and the biggest fear of every pro athlete has just been realized in this situation. It's no wonder, with situations like this, that pro athletes feel the need to keep armories in their homes and a piece on them at all times - which in turn leads them to gun possession crimes. While there are certain aspects with being famous that just goes with that territory, something like this is something no athlete should ever have to deal with and situations like this makes it a no-win situation for athletes.

Has any of the news reports talked about what brought on the shooting? Crazy fan or what?

I am telling you what, being an NFL player is getting to be the most dangerous job in the world. Mike Rowe needs to start a Discovery show called Deadliest Catch, but it is about NFL players....

Don't forget the two home invasions against NBA players this summer too... If he pulls through I wonder how much function of that leg he will have...

There is probably more to this story than a home invasion. He has had a somewhat checkered past - although none of this would lead to being shot in your home. This is from Yahoo sports....

Taylor has been in trouble numerous times since he was drafted as the No. 5 overall pick in 2004. He has been fined at least seven times during his professional career for late hits and other infractions, including a $17,000 penalty for spitting in the face of Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game in January 2006. He also was fined $25,000 for skipping a mandatory rookie symposium shortly after he was drafted.

Redskins coaches and players have defended Taylor, saying he was smart and misunderstood. Taylor has been slow let anyone into his inner circle. He has rarely spoken to reporters, saying he does not trust them. Teammates said he became more mature over the last year after he became a father for the first time.

In 2005, Taylor was accused of brandishing a gun at a man and repeatedly hitting him during a fight that broke out after Taylor and some friends went looking for the people who had allegedly stolen his all-terrain vehicles.

Taylor reached a deal with prosecutors last year after they agreed to drop felony charges against him. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors in the assault case and was sentenced to 18 months probation. The pleas prompted another fine from the NFL but kept his football career intact.

He also was ordered to talk about the importance of education at 10 Miami schools and had to contribute $1,000 for scholarships to each of those schools.

The man Taylor allegedly hit, Ryan Hill, sued, seeking at least $15,000 in damages. Hill sustained bruises to his body, incurred medical expenses and lost wages because of the fight, the lawsuit said.

Let's not forget that most gunshot wounds are caused by the person's own gun, whether it was an accident (cleaning the gun) or domestic, the report says nothing about someone breaking into the home.

    From the article:
A family friend who did not want to be identified told ABC-TV 10 in Miami that Taylor was shot twice.
Normally you don't shoot yourself twice while cleaning a weapon.

And I will add, anyone who gets shot cleaning a weapon shouldn't own a weapon in the first place.

Yeah, I just saw that he was shot twice. Guess that would be hard to do...

Anyone think it's a little odd and irresponsible for the original article to include his home address?
