    What happens if...

OU beats Missouri in the Big 12 Championship? The Big 12 will have 3 teams in the top 8 in the BCS. Currently Missouri #1, KU #5, OU #10.

If OU beats Missouri this weekend, Missouri would likely fall 5 or 6 spots, KU would be bumped up a spot, and OU would go up several spots. OU is basically locked into the Fiesta Bowl. But KU will likely be ranked higher in the BCS than Missouri so will they go to a BCS bowl game over Missouri who just beat them since 3 teams from 1 conference can't play in BCS games? That would be terrible if KU edges out Missouri for a BCS game 1 week after Missouri beat them.

OU and probably KU would go to the BCS and mizzou would go to the cotton bowl. It is pretty much a guarantee that the loser of the big12 championship game is going to cotton.

Yup, KU would get the bid and Mizzou left out of the BCS - I firmly believe that would happen if OU wins. It's happened before. It's no secret that you're much better off not going to the conference title game than you are going to the game and losing.

I don't think it matters though - I really don't see Mizzou losing to OU this time around.

    Re: What happens if...

So KU is basically locked into a BCS game without winning the Big 12 North. And the team that beat them for the North title could get left at home if they lose to OU this weekend. Makes sense...

It would be great to see Missouri win and get 2 North teams into the BCS (neither one named Nebraska or Kansas State), with one going to the national title game.

Yup, that's how it will work out.

And I agree - seeing both Mizzou and KU in the BCS would be fun to watch. Both are very good teams and - look to be just as good in '08. Our Cyclones better pack a lunch for those two games next year.

i think georgia is in the same position in the sec. tenessee would have to beat lsu in the championship game i think for them to go to a bcs. georgia appears already in one and could possibly play for a national title if wvu and mizzou both were to lose.

So that would make us the only North team to not make a BCS game yet. Sigh.

Umm - guess what - Oklahoma, Mizzou, and Kansas were ALL Big 8. The Big XII BCS teams this year are ALL going to be former Big 8 members.

There's no way Kansas deserves to be #5. They haven't beaten anyone with a record better than 7-5 (Central Michigan & Texas A&M).

    1. Same can be and is said of Ohio St - yet nobody seems to care that they're a 1-loss team that's just waiting to be back-doored into the National Title game.

    2. They've beaten all but 1 team on their schedule - all other 1-loss teams are ahead of them in the polls and only Hawaii is a team with a better record that's behind them. Bottom line is win the games you're scheduled to play regardless who it's against.

    3. I'm not saying that KU necessarily deserves anything with their record, but SOS has a very minimal impact when it comes to BCS eligibility due to the two "K-State" rules put in place when K-State got screwed out of the BCS in its first two years due to SOS components. But then again, if we continue on this argument we're just going to get me into another argument about the legitimacy of the BCS in general...

Bottom line - Kansas won the games they were scheduled and they're going to be rewarded for doing so.

If you've watched KU, you know they are a legitimate team this year and will be one next year as well.

    Re: What happens if...

Missouri is really getting hurt by playing in the Championship game. They won the division and if the season were over today, would be playing in the national title game.

Lose next week and they do not make a BCS game. If they lose, they fall from BCS #1 to the Cotton Bowl. Ouch.

There is a lot riding on this game for Missouri.

Just as there was a lot riding on the game Saturday night in KC - they did just fine then. Clearly they came out and played relaxed while KU had troubles with handling the pressure in the first half and early part of the 2nd.

    Re: What happens if...

If Kansas ends up in the top 4, they're definitely in. But I'm not sold that a 2 loss Missouri team would get passed up for a one loss Kansas team, especially since Mizzou beat them in the last game of the regular season, and Mizzou's body of work is much better than KU.

Anyone know of a comparable situation where a team that was #1 in the BCS lost in the last week and didn't make the BCS bowls?
