    GMC Terrain

I'm looking at getting a new, or slightly used, mid sized SUV. I've been looking at GMC Terrains and wanted to see if anyone on the board had one and what their thoughts on it were. Or if you have a similar vehicle and think that's a better alternative, let me know. Looking for something in the $25,000-$30,000.

    Re: GMC Terrain

This is the same car I've been looking at. Although I am in the 18-22k range.

I've been looking for about a year so I have plenty of experience with other similar models. I keep coming back to the Terrain because it has a rugged truck/masculine look. Other small SUVs (to me) appear to be very feminine. The Rav4, Sportage, Compass, Santa Fe, and Honda CRV all scream female to me. This is espeically true with the Mazda CX 7/9 and the Murano. Those look like minivans to me.

Fuel economy is okay, even with the AWD option. If you get one let us know how you like it.

I've never understood what people like about mid-size suvs...they are pretty close to what a full size costs and normally don't get any better gas mileage. Plus you have next to little leg room inside them...just my opinion though. I've had a Yukon and an escalade and I loved them both.

I definitely understand what you're saying about some of the other SUVs in the same class. I have about an 8 min drive to work each morning, so the fuel economy isn't a huge issue for me.

I just don't want something as big as a Yukon, I don't have kids, I don't need all that space. The leg room is a concern though as I am 6'3", I haven't test drove one yet, but planning on doing that this weekend. My parents have a Sante Fe and I do feel cramped driving that.

I have a 2.1 miles commute each way and my current MPG is 11 in the city. I understand about not needing good MPG but those trips to Des Moines, KC, and Ames really add up fast with such bad fuel economy. My goal is to at least double it with my next car.

    Re: GMC Terrain

It sure seems like you can get a great price on the Terrains, if they hold up it would be reasonable to get one.

    Re: GMC Terrain

I wish there was a Cyclone dealer around the area that would offer better prices on bare-bones models. Have you found the ones of the lots are always packed with extras?

    Re: GMC Terrain

My in-laws have a Terrain and they love it. I really like the look of those. I drove a Hyundai Santa Fe which was awesome and I never had any problems with it. You might check that out as well.

The Terrain AWD is rated about 20 city 29 highway
The Yukon AWD is rated about 13 city 18 highway

I don't consider that pretty close.

I just bought a 2013 Terrain 2 weeks ago. I am 6'2" and don't even have the seat pushed all the way back. The back also has pretty good leg room. I have not had it out on the highway for any extended time yet but it rides nice, and I agree that it has a nicer overall look to it as opposed to the othe mid sized SUVs

They say country music speaks to the heart. Unfortunately, it has to go through your ears to get there.

    Re: GMC Terrain

I'm looking at similar options, some that I plan to check out along with the terrain are the CX-5 (manager has one and likes it), and the subaru crosstrek. Will check out the escape and some of the japanese models as well just to get a good comparison, even though I'm not big on the looks.

I don't do signatures. Blondes, brunettes, and red heads are a different story.

    Here is why

    GMC Yukon
    Front Headroom 40.3 inches
    Rear Headroom 39.2
    Front Leg Room 41.3
    Rear Leg Room 39
    16mpg combined
    $50K not even loaded

After 3 years this same vehicle is worth $32,500 according to KBB

    Honda CRV
    Front Headroom 40.3 inches Same
Rear Headroom 38.6 .6 inches less
    Front Legroom 41.3 Same
Rear Leg Room 38.3 .7 inches less
    25 MPG combined
    Completed loaded w/nav $31K

After 3 years this same vehicle is worth $22,800 according to KBB

    This is why

The Yukon is a nicer vehicle. It will ride better and is bigger but it's at least $20k more. It's like comparing a Toyota Camry to a Lexus GS350

My grandparents have a Terrain and they like it. That's all I've got.
