Saw this posted on a couple other boards. Willie passed away this morning. Hope Kyven was able to get back in time. Thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

So sorry to hear this news. Blessings and prayers to the family. Kyven is an outstanding young man; I imagine Willie was a very proud father. Rest in Peace Willie.

I hope he was able to watch Kyven win last night. And that Kyven was able to make it home this morning before he passed.

    Re: Willie Gadson

RIP, Willie. One of my heroes in high school who I had the great fortune to meet many years later in Iowa City, briefly, but quite memorably -- a wide ranging discussion about wrestling, coaching, and life. He would have been quite young but we even talked some about Kyven, cutting weight (my own experience) and such. A fine representative of Cyclone wrestling and Iowa State all the way around. Sympathy and prayers to Kyven and the Gadson family.

    Re: Willie Gadson

That is good to know he got to show him he had reached that goal and say his goodbyes. It is gonna be a tough time for Kyven coming up. But it would have been much worse if he hadn't made it home in time.

    Re: Willie Gadson

The MVC wrestling coaches are all behind Kyven, and have been aware of Willie's health troubles. Just talked to my dad, and he told me a couple stories about how Willie was disorganized, yet funny while he was a coach in the MVC. Says he was a great guy, and that at Kyven's senior year MVC meet, many coaches commended him about how good they saw Kyven.

    Re: Willie Gadson

    Sad news.

I remember watching Willie wrestle back in the 70's. Kyven wrestles the same way. Aggressive, non-stop motor.

    Re: Willie Gadson

I met Willie a few times when I was working retail in Waterloo. The first time he came into the store, I did not know who he was, but we talked about Iowa State wrestling for a while. He told me he was the wrestling coach at Waterloo East High School. I looked Willie up when I got home from work that night, saw he wrestled at Iowa State, and placed third at nationals in 1975.

The next couple times Willie game into the store, his son, Kyven, came with him. Kyven was a tall and scrawny looking high student, who never said a word while in the store. One of the times the two were in the store, Willie and I discussed what it took to be a champion. Willie then said to me, while pointing at Kyven, “He has what it takes to be a champion.” Yesterday, Kyven became a Big 12 champion.

I only met Willie a couple of times, but he was one of those people that can touch your heart in only a few meetings. Rest in peace Willie.

Reading this brought me to tears...one of my sons is that way in his chosen sport. He has that "it" that rarely is found in an athlete in any sport. Thank you for sharing this.

As far as depth goes though, the combination of White, Woodbury, Olaseni, Basabe, and Uthoff is much better than Niang, Ejim, Edozie, Gibson. Not because of the top 2, but because of the next 2 or 3. -DeanVogs

Willie was one of the best athletes I ever saw wrestle at Iowa State. Much too young to be gone, rest in peace Willie.
