    At Large Bids to Nationals

Last night six of our wrestlers punched their tickets to Des Moines. Here's a weight by weight look.

    125: Needs an At Large
    133: Needs an At Large

    141: Qualified
    149: Qualified
    157: Needs and At Large
    165: Qualified
    174: Qualified
    184: Qualified
    197: Qualified
    HWT: Needs an At Large

33 wrestlers get to go to Des Moines in each weight class. Of those 33, twenty-nine spots were "prequalified" and allocated to the conference tournaments happening this weekend. 4 spots at each weight were held back for At Large invitations. To be eligible for an At Large spot a wrestler must meet two of the following criteria:

    • .700 Win percentage against all competition
    • Top 33 RPI (updated after conference championships)
    • Top 33 Coaches Poll Ranking (not updated after conference championships)
    • At least one win against a wrestler who was a pre-qualifier
    • Qualifying event placement one below automatic qualification

All four of our guys meet at least two of these criteria, so they all are eligible for an At Large bid. The committee that decides At Large invites considers the following to determine who gets the spots:

    • Head-to-head competition
    • Qualifying event placement
    • Quality wins
    • Results against common opponents
    • Winning percentage
    • RPI
    • Coaches ranking
    • Number of matches contested at that weight class

Because At Large availability depends heavily on the number of upsets and who else failed to earn a bid, each weight has a different level of competitiveness for these spots. Since every tournament except the MAC and the last few matches of the Big 10 are finished I'm going to take a look today and tomorrow at our at large chances at each weight.

Currently here are the number of upsets that have happened at each weight (meaning guys who earned an allocation for their conference got it stolen from them at the tournament). These numbers could go up depending on what happens today.
    125: 6
    133: 6
    157: 1
HWT: 2 (Due to some injuries this week, there are six At Large spots available at HWT)

Re: At Large Bids to Nationals

I'll start with the easy one, Heavyweight. Gibson had a very strong resume and there were few upsets at HWT. Plus there are the two extra spots available due to guys not competing yesterday. There is basically zero chance that Gibson is not our 7th NCAA Qualifier once At Large invites are announced this week.

Thanks for the info Judoka. What would be a good team goal for nationals?

Re: At Large Bids to Nationals

So much of it hinges on Gadson that I hate to make a firm goal right now given his dad's health situation. He has terminal cancer and recently was moved into hospice care. A lot could happen in the next two weeks that could really impact Gadson's mental state or even his ability to be in Des Moines vs. Waterloo.

Really impressed with the progression of this season.. 7 guys to DSM was an absurd thought just a few months ago. Great job by the coaches and wrestlers to claw their way back into this season.

As a reference, how many guys did we send to Nationals last year?

Five, though a sixth (Spangler) had to turn down an at large invite due to concussions. Four earned their spots at Big XIIs and two (Goettl & Spangler) got At Large spots.

Re: At Large Bids to Nationals

Looking at Ryak next. His situation is much less clear cut so I need to identify who all needs an at large bid and then run through the criteria for each of them. It's going to take a while.

Ryak tweeted this morning that he hoped he didn't need surgery. So hopefully he didn't hurt something yesterday. It looked like he kind of gave up in the third period of his finals match, so an injury would explain that.

Re: At Large Bids to Nationals

Oof, another upset at 125. Here's the list of wrestlers that I think are probably in contention for At Large. I bolded Deutsch and Cullinan because those two guys are a step above the others and should get two of the four spots available. That leaves 9 guys with similar resumes with only two spots available. Cullinan getting upset today really hurt Ryak's chances.

125: UR/21 Ryak Finch, Iowa State
    125: 21/25 Joseph Langel, Rutgers
    125: 22/18 Shane Gentry, Maryland
125: 29/UR Shane Young, West Virginia
125: 23/12 Rob Deutsch, Old Dominion
    125: 28/28 Eric Montoya, Campbell
125: UR/24 Robert Rehm, Lock Haven
    125: 24/UR Domonick Malone, Northwestern
    125: UR/29 Patrick Prada, Navy
    125: 33/27 Evan Silver, Stanford
    125: 31/UR Jeffrey Ott, Harvard
125: 9/9 Christian Cullinan, Central Michigan
    *Rankings are Coaches Poll/RPI*

I'm going to skip Young because Ryak went 2-0 over him. Ryak would certainly get a bid before Young did.

Judoka- I am sure you have heard by now that Willie passed away earlier today. I am hoping Kyven was able to make it home before this happened. Blessings and Prayers to the Gadson family
