Anybody done a US Virgin Islands vacation?

I'm considering planning one for next year but want to do it in February. Does anyone know what I could expect the weather to be like at that time? We'd probably hang at one location so I'm wondering what the best place is to stay in USVI?

    TIA

Re: Anybody done a US Virgin Islands vacation?

I would suggest you stay in the British Virgin Islands instead - you can get there on a 45 minute ferry out of St Thomas or fly in to Beef Island. My favorite place to go in the world. A really good place to stay is Saba Rock in the North Sound Virgin Gorda - it's nice and less expensive than surrounding resorts. I've been to the BVI many times and would be glad to answer any questions about any places or islands there.

Yeah, this is my biggest concern. I don't want to go there when it's rainy. Will def check out BVI.

Take off the words "Island Vacation" and I still couldn't help you.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I went to St Thomas about a year and a half ago. It was a good time, but I probably wouldn't go back. It was basically one big rock. Driving was a huge pain as there is no road signs and no maps (not even Google maps). You drive on the left side of the road, but the steering wheels are on the left side since they import their vehicles from the US.

Re: Anybody done a US Virgin Islands vacation?

I went to St Thomas and St John a couple years ago - it was mid march. Weather was gorgeous. Sunny and 80s. St Thomas is larger, and has Charlotte Amalie (sp?) where cruise ships will stop in. The downtown is kind of cool, but also sort of crummy. I felt like Jack Sparrow could pop out from behind any corner. Red Hook on the east end of the island has ferrys to St John, which is a pretty sleepy island, but with better/ more scenic beaches. If you want to party, stick with St Thomas, if you want R&R, go with St John. On St Thomas, you can get around in "safaris" (truck taxis) and on St John, you'll have to rent a car - probably a jeep as some of the roads are really steep.

You should look into going to Rhode Island.

Re: Anybody done a US Virgin Islands vacation?

Went to St. Thomas the year the women played down there, and loved it. We stayed at the only all-inclusive on the island and it was out away from the hustle and bustle.

The weather was perfect everyday, beaches were great. We caught the ferry to St. John one day, and you can ride the ferry to St. Croix or BVI if you wanted to. If you go the BVI you will need a passport that you don't need for the USVI.

We had no problem driving on the island or getting around. If you go downtown near where the cruises come in, there will be a ton of people if the cruise ships are docked there.

I plan to go back in a few years.

I was in St Thomas in December of 1998. Went Scuba diving off Coki Beach. Best scuba diving I've ever done. Granted, I have not dived in Grand Cayman, Australia, etc. But I definitely enjoyed my time in St Thomas.

Re: Anybody done a US Virgin Islands vacation?

Sounds like someone has a decision to make. I'll agree with the previous poster. BVI is for the slower pace and St. Thomas is for the people how need to be able something different every day.

If you're worried about to people on St. Thomas or need to get away from the crowd I'd recommend going to Black Beard's Castle. It is a pay to enter site. When we went there there were three cruise ships in port and we saw less then ten people one the grounds. They do offer a higher proof of flavored rum (coconut, banana, and pineapple) in the gift shop that was good. Bring back some of Black Beards rum and Calypso Island rum.
