I agree with this and just because you're a player's coach doesn't mean you don't have discipline. In fact I thought it's been pretty much accepted that most kids appreciate discipline. And just because you play a less controlled upbeat style of basketball like Fred and Morgan ( as opposed to G-Mac) doesn't mean you have an undisciplined style or team. In fact I'll take watching the looser more uncontrolled team over the overly controlled team anyday.

wayne was a cat turd and mac was a dogg turd. you can argue over which stinks more all day long if you want. At the end of the day they both are turds who stink.

Anyone who puts McDermott ahead of Morgan has an axe to grind, one way or the other.

Morgan was clearly not a good head coach, but he took us to the 2nd round of the NCAAs, and he kept Hilton a very tough home floor. There were more than a few games in his tenure that were pure Hilton Magic.

I dare you to name ONE game in McDermott's tenure that could qualify as anything resembling Hilton Magic.

When we squeaked one out against North Dakota State in '09... that is what the Magic is all about.

Re: How would you rank our last 6 coaches?

I'm seriously getting a headache reading all of these posts putting McDermott ahead of Morgan.

I just don't understand it. Are you people just that enamored by the fact that McDermott was from Iowa? Or his nephew posted here? Are you racist? Have you ever watched basketball? Do you like losing more than winning? Do you hate exciting home atmospheres and up-tempo basketball? Did you hate "Family Matters"? Any/all of the above? I'm not accusing anyone of anything, I'm just throwing the only plausible reasons I can think of for rating McDermott ahead of Morgan.

Seriously, someone put together a coherent, logical, fact-based argument that McDermott was a better coach at Iowa State than Morgan.

For whatever your reason you can try to lump Morgan with GMac if you want to, but the facts and records are clear that at ISU the cat turd was twice the coach as the dog turd.

hilton magic died when LE lost to EIU in that fatefull NIT game. attendance has slumped until the Mayor took over. the magic only came back for a worthy coach.

I guess magic is in the eyes of the beholder. I felt it a number of times in big wins during the Morgan era.

Re: How would you rank our last 6 coaches?

    1. Larry (Back to Back Big 12 Titles gives you this honor - Loved and still love Larry Eustachy)
    2. Tim (Solid coach, took us up a level after Johnny. Solid years at ISU.)
    3. Fred (What he has accomplished after the total disaster of the coach before him has been incredible. This guy will be the best when it is all said and done.)
    4. Johnny (The original - the FATHER of "Hilton Magic" - he wouldn't have a problem being behind any of the guys ahead of him. WOO - EEE!!!)
    5. Morgan (Won a NCAA Tourney game...But just imagine Larry coaching those teams.....Morgan was clearly better than the guy in 6th though.)

I won't give the guy in OBVIOUS last place any recognition here.

I don't know how anyone can say that Hilton Magic was dead before the start of the Morgan era. All 3 of his seasons (even the crappy one) featured some incredible home atmospheres/wins.

If they hate Family Matters than they are probably putting Larry at the bottom of the list as well since Larry recruited Urquel's cousin.

"There are five real good recruits in the state. We got three of them. One couldn’t get into school, and the other went to (the University of) Iowa...which is about the same thing." - Coach Johnny Orr

Obviously there were more than 12,000 at a lot of the big games. But Hilton Magic is something you feel during the game, whether there's 12,000 or 14,000 in attendance.

Honestly...Wayne Morgan's teams made me want to slit my wrists. I hated Cyclone BBall under Wayne Morgan.

Not saying Greg was any better, but Morgan was just plain awful.
